Junaid looks promising can develop in to something very useful Gul you always hope will finally start using his brains more. Sadaf is the real wild card he's chalking up stats never seen before in Pakistan first class cricket.Ofcourse all this is a far cry from Aamer-Asf days.
Yeah. Cheema is okay, Gul is slightly above average and Junaid has a lot of potential. It's decent but not a great attack though really; not something to build a team around or get particularly enthralled about. They're going to need a good spinner and a good batting lineup to be a particularly good side; that pace attack isn't going to be the main feature of a good side unless Sadaf really guns it.

You don't always have to be special to get excited, you just need to have the ability to take 20 wickets and be better than the rest.

Now when I look at other attacks in world cricket I think we are bubbling along ok.

Amir and ASIf were indeed special by any standards, but let's draw line, they are in the past.

Most countries would be severely dented if they lost 2 outstanding bowlers, and pak ofcourse were hurt, but the next best bowlers are doing an honourable job, and i hope they make asif/amir a distant memory.

Chandimal deserves a hit there, especially over struggling Thirimanne. Chandimal is very well known to play spin, and has said that he'd take on Swann in test matches (unfortunately, rank **** in the form of Maharoof played instead of him). He'll definitely take on Ajmal and Rehman if set. But he's bit suspect against the moving ball. Dilshan has to go. There are no second thoughts of it. He was useful with the ball but Randiv would have bowled better and scored few more runs too. Welegedara looks like a spent force. He needs a break. Prasad did well, and will need another quick man to support. So Pradeep should come in. Kosala Kulasekara can occupy #7, and he likes to bash spinners too. At the moment SL batsmen looked like stunned cattle against Ajmal, Hafeez and Rehman, very unlikely of them. Sam would have been the man for it, as he dominates spinners, not by big hitting, but with nudges and nurdles everywhere. The only player to show attacking instinct against spin was PJ and he's out as well. Sanga nor Mathews are the best players of spin in the team. Hence including Chandimal makes more and more sense.

Atleast Sammy is a decent bowler. Dilshan bowled OK, but he's there to bat. Especially go after the spinners.

Just going to play Devil's Advocate for a moment. It's clear in terms of the here and now that Thilan Samaraweera would strengthen this SL side, but are they not at least attemtping to plan for the future by creating a place for an opportunity for a young batsmen to experience Test cricket ? With Dilshan at 35 and Sanga and Mahela at 34 and all very unlikely to be left out, if they are planning to bring on a new player or two, then isn't that going to have to be at the expense of Samaraweera ?

yeah Junaid seems awful with the new ball.

Interesting now with Wahab, Cheema, Gul, and Khan all competing for spots in the team. I guess Tanvir can kiss his career goodbye
I would still include Wahab as the third pacer...and open attack with Gul/Wahab or Junaid/Wahab. Wahab to me is a much better new ball bowler and gets the shape a little bit as well...

Sam will anyway hang his boots in 2-3 seasons time. Sanga and MJ will go up to 4 seasons given that they are 33. Dilshan will last for 1 - 2 seasons. There will be window for two new comers to play with Sanga and MJ for a season, as well as Mathews. Dropping Sam to give non-performing youngsters a chance is a massive lol.

That's similar to what Australia did with Katich, bringing Hughes in his place, just on a smaller scale. It's Test cricket, you don't drop batsmen unless you know there's someone who's going to do better in their place.

if SL wanted to get rid of a senior Til DIl should have been the first on the list as he is the worst of the big 4.

That's precisely what was stupid about it though. Willingly and knowingly weakening the team for a series in the vague and distant hope for the possibility that maybe one day it it might possibly come off way down the track if everything goes to plan makes no sense. You pick your best team for each and every Test; end of.

That reasoning only works when there is clearly a drop in quality between the old and young player. What if it's a situation where that distinction is unclear?
