I think the RP debaracle probably wrecks his chances though.

Yeah I'd agree, but if Zaheer is fit, India might do something special. If not, I think we'll walk it.
Thing is we don't have many other options, never mind how RP performed, the sheer fact that we had to call him up just sums it up for us (as far as bowlers are concerned). At least with Irfan we get that extra batting depth, and he's a genuine swing bowler, so I expect him to have at least one or two good performances with the ball (factoring in Australia's weaker batting line up compared to last time).

Praveen - Irfan - Zak - Ishant is what I'm looking at, Sree can GTFO. I can't think of any other test bowlers for India, we're in that dire of a position.

I don't know about that. You look at the way England as opposed to Australia approached the 05 Ashes, for example, and then flip it around for the return series, and you can see that motivation can often be a big factor.

I don't think it'll be a major point of difference, though.
Motivation is very important. However, the willingness of some ageing Indians to win in Australia isn't the strongest cause. Plenty of Australian players have points to proove too.

Yeah, that's why I reckon it won't be a major point of difference.

Then both teams will be more motivated than ever before to win!!! :)

I mean this is probably the last overseas series that guys like dravid, tendulkar, laxman will play and I'm pretty sure a 2-0 defeat against Aus, after having got whitewashed against england, is the last thing they want. Imagine the consequences...

Same applies to someone like Ponting.

As the ndtv host said during the england-ind series, ind v aus is the mother of all series (from indian point of view at least).

Depends on the pitches. If flat, fully expect India to cash in and give their crap bowling attack something to bowl at. Just can't see how any combo of the Aussie bowling attack will challenge them. They'll be competitive, the occasional bowler may even have a day out but, generally, I reckon their strength as a unit will be to suffocate the Indians. Also reckon the newer Indian batters will be in the runs rather than the veterans.

Add to that a still collapsy Aussie batting line-up.....

could well be a tour too far for some of the galacticos.

what are the odds against tendulkar, dravid, laxman and ponting retiring after this series.

anyone know if there has been such a retirement of great batsmen simultaneously in the past?

I'd be surprised if none of the retire, but I don't think all of them will. I'll say that Dravid, Ponting and Sachin could all quit after this series.

If the top 3 run getters in the history of Test cricket all retire together after the same series, the world will literally explode.

LITERALLY.

3-1 Australia. India will win a Test because at some point in the series some random Indian "fast" bowler will be annointed the saviour of Indian pace bowling by inducing a collapse and winning a Test, before 5 years of spectacular rubbishness (see also Ajit Agarkar at Adelaide in 2003 and Irfan Pathan in 2008 at Perth). Nothing surer about an Australia-Indian series.

Really can't believe the Australian pessimism. India's bowling is seriously crap. Australia's bowling is much better than England made it look in the Ashes. You'll win this series easily.
