Another disappinting result, with 298 on the board thought this could be our day. Not to be. Dernbach went to pieces towards the end, wide, no-balls, and very few deliveries right in the blockhole, actually none of them seemed able to really execute the main one-day skills towards the end (maybe throughout the 50 overs but I didn't see all of it).

My worry is our wicket-taking ability in those middle overs. We've always struggle to penetrate in this period, especially on the sub-continent. The Indians play the spinners well, and we don't yet seem to have that bowler that can get us a wicket when we most need it.

Haven't seen Kieswetter's dropped catches, but his standing on the stumps at that stage of the game was a real kick in the ribs. It was a simple mis-judgement that can happen when you take the ball in front of the stumps, a technique that may have been proven to be slightly quicker, but not one I've completely bought into yet.

Still, agree that this isn't a crucial series and more can be achieved in these next couple of games by having a look at Borthwick and Meaker, in terms of ODI's in the future, along with Bairstow, let's get some games into these guys.
Actually we did ok with wicket taking in the middle - our problem is wicket taking up front with the new ball, we allowed India to cruise to 160odd for 1.

It's not the first time Kieswetter has dropped an absolute clanger or ****ed around knocking the bails off like a moron. On a couple of occasions he's missed a run out because he's got no ****ing idea where the stumps are. Maybe we're spoiled with how good Prior has become, but there's absolutely no way that he'd have messed up that run out chance - he could have broken the stumps whilst checking out a hottie in the crowd because Prior has a system where he knows exactly where he is in relation to the stumps and therefore doesn't have to look around or grope around blindly trying to break the wicket. Even allowing for the fact he's a clumsy oaf, Kieswetter could still have run Jadeja out by removing the stumps instead of staring at them like a slack-jawed muppet.

Yes Prior always anchors his right foot in a particular position so he knows exactly where the stumps are.

Not sure I'd say we're doing ok in those middle overs, yes with the new ball we need to be more effective, especially today by all accounts. But over the three ODI's, in the first one we took only three wickets between the 12th over and the 40th over, we didn't take any in the second ODI from the 7th over through to the end of the game in the 37th over, and while today while we picked up a few towards the latter end of the middle period, we still allowed the platform to be well and truly built by getting one wicket in the first 33 overs. We can't get the wickets to break these partnerships.

I meant today. But I think the two biggest problems with the bowling are:

The inability to take wickets first up with the new ball
The way the bowling unit falls apart as soon as teams go after us at the death.

Still surprised Cook choose to bat given the match was being played at Mohali and the winter is just starting, surely he knew dew would be a problem at this ground. And given that Eng won most of there games while chasing in the just passed ODI series you should fancy chasing. Just don't get it.

Going back to the fielding - I think we're over-rating the fielding ability of the current side because the Test side is such a well drilled unit - but that's possible because the Test side is pretty settled and because each member of the side has a more specialised position in Tests.

Strauss - 1st slip
Cook - short leg/3rd slip
Trott - square leg/midwicket
Pietersen - gully
Bell - short leg/covers
Morgan - point
Prior - wicketkeeper
Swann - 2nd slip
Broad - mid on/off/fine leg
Anderson - 3rd slip/mid on/off
Tremlett/Bresnan/Finn - fine leg

Of the ODI players in that lineup, Cook's positions don't really exist, neither does Pietersen's or Swann's to an extent, we're missing Bell, Morgan, Broad and Anderson who are amongst our best ground fielders. The likes of Patel, Bopara, Trott, Finn, Dernbach, Bresnan and Cook don't strike me as being particularly quick or athletic across the ground - that's 7 of the playing 11. How many times did India take singles to Cook that simply shouldn't have been singles? Then to those 7, add in the fact that the wicketkeeper is pretty rubbish and that Bairstow is a specialist keeper and Swann a specialist slip, and we've really only got Pietersen who I'd say is actually any good in the field for an ODI side (although Bairstow to his credit fielded pretty well.)

And as much as I've laid into the fact that Kieswetter is just dire, some of the throws he had to contend with today were woeful.

Some very good points covered in these two posts. Bairstow keeping, a proper batsman drafted in and Kieswetter being shown the door would solve a few immediate problems.

And I think I speak for most that the just concluded match should be Dernbach's last international game for a while. I don't care how good a bowler he is in domestic limited over competitions; right now his game is all over the park and he needs to mentally sort out his bowling. The way he's haemorrhaging runs is just not on.

Kieswetter committed some amateurish mistakes at crucial intervals of the match. Dropping Kohli can be categorised as a mistake but the Jadeja missed was unforgivable for a specialist keeper
Just doesn't look that comfortable as a keeper, never looks neat or like he's got a proper feel for it..

While today's mistake with the run-out was very funny to watch, it just showed how lost he is when he has to position himself. I've seen him muff those before though not to quite such jaw-dropping effect. He must have felt such a clown.

The one bowler who has increased his stock while out there is Finn, I've been really impressed with him, he's turned himself to a very quick bowler, along with his height makes him a real handful and he seems to be improving each time I watch him and seems a hard worker.
He really has bowled without any luck whatsoever and should have had so many more wickets than he has but every edge and miss-hit hasn't gone to hand in the last 3 games. If he could work on a yorker he would be a real menace in one day cricket.

England should get Buttler in the side, he's just sat there watching waiting, for the T20 game and it would be good to see what he can do out there, he's also a better 50 over player than 20. Personally I'd move KP up to open with Cook and give Bairstow the gloves and bring Meaker in for Dernbach for the last two games but they're more likely to bring Bell in to open, if they do make a change.

Tbh I thought the same and like you say England have had success chasing and seem more comfortable at it, add to that the Indian spinners would have had a hard time gripping the ball, I'd have thought it was the more logical choice.

Yadav did what everyone expected though, was decently quick but sprayed it everywhere and went for runs as a result.

You can't get a better time than now to try KP open the innings for the next two dead-rubber games
