Battle of Cricketers II - CW's Favorite Cricketer (now underway)

Plenty of his fellow countrymen who shared a dressing room with him wouldn't have crossed the street to piss on him were he on fire, tbf.

Matter of record Fingleton and O'Reilly formed friendships with DRJ based on a mutual disdain for "the little bastard".
Yep, we all know about his feuds with those two, among others, and I don't reckon either side in that was blameless (he and Tiger did patch things up somewhat over time though TBF).

That being said, you'll find plenty of blokes - team mates, opponents and neutrals - who speak very highly of him too. Like everything, I suppose, it depends on one's perspective.

Didn't Bradman also force Grimmett to retire from test cricket after by far Grimmett's best series, and thus forced him to play at only FC level during Grimmett's most productive years?

iirc the o'reilly/bradman thing was as much to do with religion as anything else.
Oh, well in that case Bradman comes out of it looking much better. Religious bigotry ftw. :p

The story, as O'Reilly told it (Tiger wasn't Sir Donald's biggest fan so hardly an unbiased source) was that Clarrie made a joke about Bradman ensuring he got out before he had to face Ernie McCormick in a Shield game versus Victoria (McCormick was reputedly very sharp and Bradman reputedly slightly windy when faced with express pace) and Bradman used his influence to ensure Grimmett was permanently excluded from the test side.

Clarrie was, however, 44 so there's a case his best years were behind him.

Ha ha, not sure it was quite that one-sided. :p

Though Grimmett was 44, his last series was a legendary success and his best FC years as a bowler came after he retired from test cricket.
Did they? I didn't know that. His last series was statistically his best, no question and to have taken something like 54 wickets in his last six Tests it's hard to say he was dropped because of form.

The other story was that, with Clarrie 44, Bradman (and the other selectors) felt it was time for the next generation to come through, and they wanted to blood Fleetwood-Smith - they were perhaps also mindful of Grimmett's last home series against England (32/33) where he was actually dropped for being so ineffective. That being said, I reckon Grimmett had probably done enough to earn another series or two.
