all the cricket fans around the world should consider mazhar mahmood (the reporter) a hero.. this guy has put his life in danger to clean the game of cricket.. he should be rewarded for this.. Once these allegations are out in the public it hardly matters whether Australian cricketers are innocent. They become tainted regardless

Obviously Majeed wasn't making the remarks in court per se, but (as I understand) slander covers oral defamation and the burden of proof in the UK is on the defendant. So if he can't prove his accusations...?

Not entirely sure that a claim would succeed though. The only person to whom he made the allegations was a person posing as being interested in paying for spot fixing so instinctively I have some doubt that there's enough there by way of publication of the defamatory remarks. I'd also have thought that the fact that those allegations were further broadcast via court proceedings is irrelevant because things said and done in court, and reporting of court proceedings, are covered by immunity from suit.

It's really sad to hear the comments regarding the Australian cricketers. The Australian politicians should have some faith in their own heroes instead of taking Majeeds word for it, especially since he was boasting about his connections.

He hasn't named any specific Australian player though, so if anything, it would make it that much harder to sue when no individual party has been defamed. Personally, I would LOVE for that sleaze ball to get sued. Take him to the cleaners any way possible.

I don't think a defamation lawsuit would stand up; in trying to boast of his influence he's just said "Australian players are in on it" as opposed to saying "I can set up a meeting with Ricky Ponting, Michael Clarke, Shane Watson and Mitchell Johnson who I hold influence with."
