ya like you mentioned for Ponting and McGrath, Richards faced khan, hadlee, lillee etc. I dont' see your point.

There wasn't an attack equivalent to WI but there were bowlers equivalent to marshal, ambrose etc and Richards faced them all.
And who would that be?

Imran, Hadlee, and Lillee.
As far as stats are concerned none them are. They played in the pretty same era so there is no question of era adjustment here. Okay maybe there is for Amborse since he majorly played in the 90's but that only benefits him though.

Both Amobose and Marshall are comfortably ahead here. Holding provides a better competition to them then they do to Marshall and Ambrose.

But obviously Marshall and Ambrose have those averages because they didn't bowl to the best team in the world. I have just completed the circle!

That much is true, The only true ATG was Richards, closely followed by Greenidge (underrated as he may be) and LLoyd.
And once again true, there is no equivalent to MM. :)

Btw when in another thread we were voting for the top 5 players of all time, you did include Viv in your top 5.
But agree with you with Akran and Lillee, dont know how they even beat their country men, Mcgrath and Imran into the first team. Also in that regard to me Lara did at some crucial times dominate the top three bowlers of his and some might say any era in Mcgrath, Warne and Murali and runs Viv and Tendulkar for that matter very close in my mind for the final spot in any all time team.

I know what you are talking about but I did that by mistake tbh. I meant to include Gilchrist but was thinking of Richards because of the posts above so I put his name down by mistake. It was too late to edit when I looked back on it.

I can understand that. I also wanted to include Gilchrist instead of Warne. Was just checking though.

People aren’t appreciating playing for a atg batting side and what that will do for your bowling. Or Australian pitches or better fielding side. Even 10-15 extra catches can drop bowling average a full run. Not much to choose between the two IMO. I actually play cricket at a competitive level and anyone who actually plays cricket can see the two and know that wasim’s record doesn’t do him justice. It is an art form what we was able to achieve with regularity. That’s why his peers rate him so highly. Not to suggest McGrath is worse but that it’s very close and you can go either way.

Same as Warne vs murali. Murali played 2/3rds of his matches in Asia where even Kumble and Jadeja have better records than Warne because of how much those tracks help spinners (when they are in the home team). Warne is the best sena spinner ever. He crushed it in SL demonstrating my prior point. On the other hand he had an atg lineup and McGrath. Tough to compare to two. Equal imo

Jadeja may be, but Kumble and Harbhajan averages grand 40+ in SL.

Actually non of the touring spinners have a good record in Asia other than Warne, Ajmal and Swann. This shows playing majority against SC opponents actually have worked against SC spinners. After all they have to bowl to SC batsmen who are good at playing spin.

The second part is also not true. Murali has better stats against NZ and ENG than Warne and the latter has better stats in SAF. In NZ, ENG and SAF, they both were inseparable with performances.

Having competition in the team will reduce the bag of wickets, but will help to get them cheaper.

While I would give you the fielding part, didn't Wasim also focus more on the stumps, and if Pakistani pitches weren't as conducive to fast bowling, why the huge disparity between Imran's home and away records?

But seriously, you can say that Wasim was more exciting to watch or even had more variety. But he wasn't as effective or better than McGrath.

Accepted theory is Pakistan home umpiring, and more effective ball-tampering (easier to get away with at home I guess?)

I recall Wasim had an unusally high proportion of tail-end wickets too, in contrast with McGrath who had an unusally (possibly the highest) proportion of top-order wickets. There is really no comparison between these 2, different types of bowlers, but whichever way you slice it Wasim is a tier or 2 below

Depends on what you mean by whichever way you slice it. As far as their peers are concerned most of them rate Wasim as harder to face than McG.

If there is a difference, its the quality of fielding support.
