Squad: MS Dhoni (capt & wk), Gautam Gambhir, Parthiv Patel, Ajinkya Rahane, Virat Kohli, Suresh Raina, Ravindra Jadeja, R Ashwin, Varun Aaron, Umesh Yadav, Vinay Kumar, S Aravind, Rahul Sharma, Manoj Tiwary, Praveen Kumar.
Parthiv and Rahane did well in England. Good luck to them. Jadeja should be in and around the set up, at all times so good to see him there. **** knows where Yusuf Pathan is, he is an extremely dangerous batsman in Indian conditions. He is slightly out of form, but that won't stop him hitting a match winning century every so often and always contributing a few overs with the ball. Him and Jadeja should always be competing for that number seven role.
Aaron rightfully retains his place. He looks raw to me, but so did a young Brett Lee. His pace has been overblown, but do not be surprised to see him occasionally topping 145kph. He is very skiddy. I'd compare him to a slightly more raw, slightly more skiddy version of Meaker. Yadav, on the other hand, has no place in any Indian ODI squad. The guy had three chances and did abysmally at ODI level. At List A, he has 18 wickets at 41.61. I say it time and again, if this guy cannot get out Ranji OD batsmen, he has no chance of picking up ODI wickets with any consistency. Adrenaline might get him through a good ODI or two, but he will be found out. There is not a single ODI standard quick bowler who would average more than 30 at Indian domestic OD cricket, imo.
Vinay Kumar retains his place. Disappointed to see him play so poor in England. Do not expect him to last long. Aravind is an interesting one. His record is good at List A, with 28 wickets at 22.10 (4.23). His T20 record is good, with 37 wickets at 18.02 (7.28). He has beautiful variations, but the issue is a lack of speed, which can prove pretty fatal in ODI cricket. He bowls around 120-125kph which means England might just be able to counter him by charging him. This has not been an issue in the IPL but perhaps in ODI cricket where batsmen can be more measured, it will be a problem. Earned a shot though and good to see the selectors going with someone with a good record.
As for Sharma, well, he is an interesting one. England tend to struggle against good spin in ODI cricket. He seems a slightly unusual spinner with a pretty lanky frame and tall action. Certainly not in the Warne mould which has affected the likes of Kaneria, Smith and Rashid, to name just a few. However, with such a strong IPL performance and a List A performance of 25 wickets at 18.56 (4.28), I will never argue with his selection based on things so subjective as bowling action.
