*Official* First Test at Lord's

Actually it came at about the right time for India too. Perhaps could have done with another couple of overs, but with both batsman on 5 there and both seamers maxed almost , Dhoni would have ran out of options.

This gives a chance to recover for one more burst after Lunch.
PK only had one over...

Obviously the fact that India have come back strong doesn't make it a poor decision. But when it comes to cricketing tactics I'm always inclined to give the tangibles much more weight than I do the intangibles. "Making a statement" looks like a bit of a silly aim when you're considerably increasing the chance that you'll lose the test match.
I think the declaration was more about nipping out a couple after two days in the field than making any sort of statement. That became a duff call as soon as they reached the close of play with none down. 20 more runs from KP and the tail would have brought about the follow-on, of course.

reckon india will find a way to screw up from here.

england ending up with a lead of 380 and india collapsing for 200!!

Tbf regarding the declaration, it was very near the end of day two! We couldn't really go into day three still batting and hope to bowl out a strong Indian line-up twice, while possibly still having to bat again ourselves.

Yeah, but KP was there and hitting it like a beach ball. What would they give for an extra 30 runs now?
470+ declaration is vindicated by having a 200 run lead on a ground known for the flatness of the pitch. The problem lays with the 5-60 odd, not the 8-470

Yeah, quite possibly. Probably a bigger factor than the risk of Sharma losing his mojo with the break.

At the same time, with the way KP was batting and with Tremlett and Anderson for support (who are no mugs with the bat), 60 runs off the last 7 overs of the day were perfectly possible, and given the failure to make any inroads in the overs we did get at them. An overnight declaration followed by bowling India out on day 3, even allowing for going in at lunch 72/5, means we'd have an enormous lead/India would be following on trying to save the Test.

Akram is wrong. Ishant hasn't swung it at all, he's got seam and bounce.
Yeah, that is what i thought too.

But just moved towards the shiny side for the Bell Dismissal on the replay. He often reverses it in India after pitching. Still not sure though....

Broad said England wouldn't have enforced the follow on unless India had been bowled out in 40-50 overs.

if these two put together a good partnership, india should just let them bat and bat and not try to get them out so that india can at least have a chance of salvaging a draw out of it....

Right someone tell Gambhir about Gordon Greenidge. This match is set up so well, still all 3 results possible (if only just). If India knock England out cheaply (very cheaply) they can think about the chase. England still in the driving seat but this has been the kind of session I think England believed they had put behind them. Incredibly similar to Chennai actually, but no Sehwag to cart Anderson round the park.... I don't think the pitch is as true as people had expected, that extra bounce sharma got looked deadly, but interestingly only seemed to get it from fairly wide of the off stump. I think Strauss, Pietersen and Bell all had a big hand in their own demise, poor shots tbh, the ball to get Trott was absolute magic. Sachin not being able to bat till 7/8 could be a serious issue, I wonder if he'll field in the next session? If Zaheer hadn't gotten himself injured (his own fault by the looks of it) I think the boot could have been quite firmly on the other foot. It's all set up for an epic 5th day anyway.
