Zimbabwe 'A' v Australia 'A' v South Africa 'A'

Nigel Benjamin

U19 12th Man
Zim XI lose by seven wickets. I just get the feeling that the auditions are over and Zim should field their strongest team for the second four day game. Mpofu should come back in place of Ncube, Price in for Chatara, Taylor for Mawoyo and maybe try Mutizwa in place of Chakabva. Chigumbura's performances of late have really been up to the standard we expect from him, getting a ton taking some key wickets is what we expect from this talented all rounder. On the Aus side, well Hughes has definitely made his case stronger and should get the opening slot alongside Watto. I don't know a lot about Krejza (well all I know is most of the Aussie guys on this forum don't like him), but from what I've seen of him so far, he doesn't look like a long term solution to problematic Aus spin department. Anyway Congrats to Tim 'one ton' Paine and his troops... oh before I forget, aren't there other wicket keepers in Australia who are better than Paine?

Tim Paine has the lowest First Class average of any regular State Keeper (now that Manou has retired), the lowest number of tons, and lowest dismissals per match. It's only on the 50s/innings ratio does he gets off the bottom and Wade has him well covered there too.

Paine - 31.03 (1 100 ) 44 games 26yr (scores 50 or better every 4.5 innings) 126 dismissals (2.9 per match)
Hartley - 31.53 (5 100) 71 games 29yr (scores 50 or better every 5.3 innings) 312 dismissals (4.4 per match)
Ronchi - 33.50 (6 100) 56 games 30yr (scores 50 or better every 5.4 innings) 209 dismissals (3.7 per match)
Wade - 37.87 (3 100) 45 games 23yr (scores 50 or better every 3.9 innings) 173 dismissals (3.8 per match)
Nevil - 39.53 (2 100) 12 games 25yr (scores 50 or better every 4.3 innings) 54 dismissals (4.5 per match)

His dismissals stat might be skewed by the fact that he played a bit as a specialist bat before Clingeleffer retired.

Yes excluding Haddin of course.

Yeah true that. Do you know how many games that was? Also he's jumped Hartley for batting average after this game.

I still think Wade is at least his equal if not better. Nothing I've seen of Paine makes me see why he should be treated as a lock for Haddin's replacement, let alone a future test captain.

most of his first 10 or so matches. didn't really have an impact on his batting average (well he got his only century with the gloves off but outside)

it's not so much a case of wade or paine or (x) better. it's simply paine has never had anything other than a solid fc season. even Hartley had a season when he got about 700 runs @ 45 odd (and did it in front of a terrible batting line-up and on the gabba which is usually pretty friendly for bowlers). i want paine to actually have a season that screams pick me. right now paine hasn't. wade has though. in both forms. but of course the keeping is a bit more of a doubt there. regardless, you'd think we would have learnt from the mess SA got themselves in with Botha. if you're gonna appoint a young guy as a future captain it can't really be a spinner or keeper.

I'm a huge Tim Paine fan and really like him as a longer form player. But his ODI selection does confuse me a bit. He's not the most dynamic batsman going around, but I think he got the jump before Wade really properly got going for the Vics.

He's got some things thoguh that will make him a good international cricketer - strong technique, lovely hands and a very good temprament. Would like to see his FC numbers in a few years, then we'd have a better idea about him. He played a lot of FC under the age of 20 from memory, opening the batting and keeping so his average might be skewed by that, and hasn't played a heap of FC the last 2 summers.

Would like to see him play more FC next summer to get a better gauge on how he is developing. Certainly the last 12-18 months, he's performed very well in white clothes with limited opportunities.

I like Paine as well, looks like the gritty type of batsmen we need. However his conversion rate is really bad. He has all the right attributes to have a lot better numbers than he has. Wade has the sort of numbers that Paine should have.

He's a Vic though :p

think Vic_o knows a bit about him. I just can't believe Ronchi still has a + 30 average
