Paine and Marsh really should be able to score plenty of runs against this attack. It's not even remotely close to the best attack Zimbabwe could field - they've gone in with no specialist spinners despite the fact that it's clearly their strength, and two of their best three pace bowlers (IMO) aren't playing either. Reckon Krejza could score a few too if he took it seriously and tried to build an innings.

I know, it kind of downgrades these runs in some ways as this is nowhere near their strongest team.

On a Zim forum, some of the posters were suggesting that they were using Aus A as a shootout for the second and third seamers' positions for the tests coming up against Bangladesh.

Yeah, indeed. It's hardly like Australia sent even a proper Second XI team over though; it's a development team that they're looking to get something out of. Zimbabwe are doing the same thing in a lot of ways; winning isn't the sole or even main objective of this series for either side.

This A side - in theory - is very strong.

The development players are Marsh, Warner and Copeland.

Marsh is the only WTF pick, but he performed very creditably in the one dayers so it isn't a bad idea to have him in the starting line-up especially as they have a long tail and should expect more runs from him than Butterworth.

Hilfenhaus, Siddle, Paine, Hughes and even Ferguson aren't exactly 'development' players though. Nor are Beer or Krejza, oh I suppose Beer is for all that he's already played a test.

And Aus A isn't a reward for having performed well in the previous season ie - Hopes, Cossie... players like that. It is usually players that are realistically /hopefully going to or are playing for Aus on the fringes.

I assume Siddle and Hilfenhaus are only batting to add a few quick runs, Ashes-style. Otherwise this is kinda odd.

E: Paine himself isn't helping by creeping like so

Oh yes he is. He's already got assigned the future captaincy with his one FC ton. Imagine what doubling that tally is gonna do?!?! Captain for the SL tour?!?!?

That's what I suspect, that he is intent on a ton before declaration. I don't really blame him, but a win would look more impressive than a 'look I got a ton... oh, and a draw'.

But this tour ain't about winning. It's all about personal glory. Hence an awful mix of kids who shouldn't be there - Marsh and originally Flauker - & test players they love and want to ensure play - originally Hilf and then Siddle. You just know if Hilf takes a 5 in one of these matches...

I reckon going for the ton is the smart and most logical move. Still a possible 150 overs left in this match, definitely enough time to get a result.
