I don't think Badri was dropped because his average in the ODI's was below some required value. The instances when he batted, he looked like he did didn't belong at that level. Also he came in at times when he had a lot of time to build an inning - So it wasn't as if the needs of ODI cricket made him look ordinary.
Exactly..

there were times when there was 0 pressure on him.. (a dead rubber WI ODI series must rank among such).. still looked like a deer in the headlights...

He appears extremely tensed at the crease.. flailing body language and stuff..

Raina looked worse than Badrinath in the ODI's and T20 combined tbh and was throwing his wicket away in crucial stages.

Badrinath was MOTM in the T20 and only really looked poor in the 4th ODI.
Correct me if wrong, but wasn't Badri given a repreieve in that T20 owing to a noball call as well?

Seriously never ever looked remotedly comfortable in the whole series tbh... Raina has done well to earn the no.6 spot for me...

He might flop in england, but that doesn't mean he hasn't done enough to erit selection for the time being..

Pujara's non selection makes me weep.. agreed.. but he hasn't really cemented that spot, unfortunately..

Your career being on the line can do that at times...

How the hell was there 0 pressure on him when the early wickets fell every match and wickets were falling around him on a low scoring match?

On top of that he was playing for a spot after waiting so long and a dead rubber does not mean no pressure.

I still can't get where except the 4th ODI he looked poor? In fact Raina looked worse as i said.

That's absolutely no excuse, all the more for an experienced bat like Badri...

To not to choke under extentuating circumstances is one of the most essential qualities required in a test player... It is called that for a reason....

Except it wasn't a test match,but a ODI.

4 Odi's after he was the best player in the T20.

Raina was batting badly. But he didn't look out of place. Also he already had a body of work on which he could be judged. If Badri had scored about only 10-15 but looked more composed he would have stood a better chance IMO.

Anyway my point is not that the decision can't be criticised. But that the criticism should be of the selectors' judgement of Badri's batting rather based on the idea that he's been dropped because he hasn't scored runs in the ODIs.

Indian domestic cricket offers a niche wherein some bowlers and batsmen who cannot quite cut it at the international level can put up impressive numbers. So selecting for the national team involves a bit of a punt. Apart from performing at the domestic level, you need to have something extra to force the selectors to bet on you instead of all the others averaging above 50.

Looking good is overrated.

Might as well select Kohli and Rohit Sharma for all the tests over Gambhir and Raina if looking good in ODI's is the Criteria.

Let's examine his performances in WI

1st ODI - chasing a low total of 214, came in at no.4 at 34/2, scored 17 off 30 and when he was out score was 61-3

3rd ODI - chasing once again a moderate total of 225, came in at no.4 at 2/26, made an extremely unconvincing 11 off 28 balls, and when out India were 60/3

4th ODI - Dead rubber - Came in at 2/42 at no.4, and rubbished around for another 12(28) and was out 3-62

Fact is he got enough chances to get going, got an opportunity to bat early and bat long, but didn't make good of those chances.

He's not a spring chicken but 31, so he needs to make best use of available opportunities..

He need not look further than Suresh Raina, who wasn't in the original XI when WC started, but came good immediately when he got a chance to perform, and didn't have to look back since.

He failed in 3 ODIs after that flawed performance in the only T20...

and in that T20 also was given a life thanks to a (post dismissal reviewed) no ball...

I am not merely going by numbers, but whenever he was out there, including the T20, he hardly looked at ease...

The question though is are we seriously analysing 3 ODI's on his first away tour to determine test selection after all the form he has been in recent times? I mean seriously?

Virat Kohli did pretty well in the ODI's ,how did he go in the tests? Raina has been the opposite.

3/4 ODI's tell you nadda.
Yuvraj is one of the best Limited over batsman around ,looks a million bucks too when he gets going but has continuously failed in tests.

Only if 'looking good' is defined in a shallow manner. It can include things like good defence, timing, 'eye', judgement, backfoot play, ability against the short ball etc... That's why you need experienced selectors who can make these calls based on watching the batsman play regardless of the format but keeping the constraints of the format in mind as well.

You're confusing two things here.

Looking good in ODis need not necessarily mean you're totally at ease in tests - agree... especially in case of rookies like Kohli etc

Looking at sea in ODIs, however doesn't mean you'll be automatically at full ease in tests - espcially when you still happen to be a rookie, which happened to Badri...

I don't subscribe to ODIs being considered as ultimate precursors to test form, but something is better than nothing at all.

Still find it hard to understand Joginder Sharma's success.

Playing ost of his cricket in the Plate league... and that he doesn't have much competition from his side itself...

The quality of plate league is still rubbish...

Anyone who has watched a decent amount of Indian FC cricket over the last 3-4 years just cannot select Yuvraj ahead of Badrinath for the England tests. It's as simple as that.

I'm afraid our selectors don't actually watch most FC matches and are just occasional FC match on tv/Every ODI match watchers like most of us. That'd be immensely tragic.

I'm disappointed but not surprised. This is a new low.

the lack of Kohli upsets me sue he had a poor start to test cricket but I back him over Yuvraj who adds nothing to the test squad.
