**Official** Sri Lanka in England / Scotland - 2011

Maybe doesn't bode well for Cook's ability to control Broad. We have seen in tests he needs to be handled firmly at times, he obviously will want to bowl but sometimes you have to say no.
Why? not at his best today but he's still comfortably England's best limited overs bowler and over the last few years, he's usually the man to take a wicket.

was the least effective seamer today, yet he got the most overs, plus he is our best death bowler, if anything he should be bowling out last.

Him and Bres bowled 6 each the other two bowlers 5, which is fair enough, when they've bowled them out. Surprised Cook didn't give Jimmy the chance to get his 5fer though.

This is so typical. Gonna end up the same as the T20 this match.
Anti-jinxing works again.

That's probably our best all-round ODI performance in a while - good to see. We're always good in English conditions, tbf, but didn't expect quite such a thrashing. Need to maintain this all series, though, which is something we rarely do.

Well played England, with a decently balanced looking team nicely bereft of bits and pieces cricketers.

Lovely but devastating critique of Stuart Broad from Michael Holding. When asked to comment on the view that Broad has the best bouncer in world cricket he said...

"Good to have a bouncer. Good to have a good bouncer. Think you need a bit more than a bouncer though"

Ouch.

After Anderson had bowled his last over the Sri Lankans took the batting powerplay. England would want to look at Dernbach in the powerplays to see if his variations are effective so Dernbach and Bresnan bowled then and Swann at that time had only 3 overs so he took over after that. There was no guarantee Anderson would pick up his 5th in one over.

With only 2 wickets left at the time and bowling him out wasn't going to effect the game, it was worth a go. Especially in the 25th over, where Cook did the double change and brought Broad and Swann on, he should have gave it to Jimmy instead of Broad.
Not that it really matters but if you get 4 wickets in Odi's and have overs left to bowl, why not, 5fer's are quite rare in Odi's.

I agree. Cook said Anderson was begging him for another over to get his 5fer. :) Maybe Cook wanted to give Broad an easy wicket to boost his confidence.

Still six more wickets to get his 200th. Hopefully before the end of the series.

Good to see some potency in the England attack but Bres and Broad at 7 & 8 is a bit too high for me. Both capable but they won't win many games chasing.

Yeah I agree, although I definitely improve this balance to teams of the past which have had Luke Wright coming in at 8.

I still think using Bopara as the fifth bowler with the option of Trott or Pietersen bowling a couple of overs makes more sense than playing Dirtbag though.

Yeah Ravi is useless, especially in the county form he's in. Samit would make more sense - why make such an effort to get him in the squad? Play him.

In one day cricket Patel strikes me as a bits an pieces guy who.can biff a few/bowl some handy overs rather than a guy who's got a defined role.

At county level, Bopara is definitely a batsman who has a handy second suit. I'd much rather have a Bopara type.than a Patel type in my XI.

If we're talking about a guy to bat at 7, Patel is definitely good enough. He's been averaging over 40 for the last two years in List A and his bowling is stronger than Bopara's. I'm not that comfortable about Bresnan batting at 7, so would rather have Patel at 7 in instead of Dernbach.

If Bopara did get back into form then he could bat at 6, but hopefully we can get a look at Stokes for that role in the near future.

I'm pretty happy with the balance as it is, unless we need two spinners, in which case Patel for Dernbach makes sense. There's always Swann at #9 to be promoted if there's a need for slogging, or Woakes could come in for Dernbach if you want more depth. Much rather have 5 proper bowlers.
