Also I'm not convinced of Khawaja opening at Test level just yet, should do it for NSW first imo.

He grew up openening. And it's not like Watson had a whole heap of opening experience before Australia, and the experience he did have he performed terribly.

As long as you have a good technique you can make the move comfortably imo.

currently? 3/4/5. Shifts himself around to suit the team. When he got recalled to the Aus squad he was at 3 and just hit 20 000 runs for the season, and then Hayden (?) got injured and he got told to open

Agree on all levels; Khawaja's more an opener than number 3 and, as you said, if you can play FC cricket, generally your technique is good enough to bat anywhere.
