The big difference between 08-09/09-10 in terms of Alonso is that we kept playing the same system without the player that was integral to that system (Alonso). Losing Mascherano this season also made it worse because those two were the fulcrum for everything else in that team. Right now, I'd argue neither of those two would fit into how we are playing at the moment. Right now we have Spearing/Lucas/Meireles/Maxi all very dynamic with their passes and movement. IMO that is what has given us success - a change in the system. And lest we forget, we were winning matches under Dalglish with Gerrard in there too (cough, United, cough). What's more important than Gerrard being in the side is Gerrard being fit. He's missed almost half the season this year.
BUT, Alonso being a better CM than Gerrard...well it just isn't true if you look at his whole career with us. In that system that Rafa had in the runner-up season Alonso was more suited than Gerrard in the middle (and ideally if you have a player capable of scoring 24 goals and 11 assists you play him closer to goal, not in midfield), I think most people would agree with that. Although to Gerrard's credit in the 06-07 season, when we played a similar system, and went to the CL final, he was asked to play alongside Mascherano a lot since Alonso missed half the season and he did very very well.
I mentioned something earlier I am not sure you guys thought about or agreed with: Alonso is a fantastic CM/DM if he has the right partner. It is in this modern form of 4-5-1/4-3-3 where he comes to the fore. When we were playing 4-4-2 in Rafa's first two seasons he was a good player but not what he is now. He was younger, less experienced, sure, but he does lack the physical aspect of playing in the middle if he isn't playing alongside someone who covers his deficiencies.
