English Domestic Season 2011

First Class Debutant
Watching him on the tapes he reminds me a bit of a left handed Finn. Looks like he relies a bit on conditions, but hey, he's only 17.

If you're an early riser, the piece will be played tomorrow on Sunrise on Sky (UK viewers) and SSN probably throughout the day.

Looking foward to the game on Sky this afternoon, Somerset v Gloucester at Taunton. Haven't seen the teams yet but am hoping to get a good look at how Kirby and Hussain go against their former side, also the exciting Jos Buttler and Craig Kieswetter. The class of James Hildreth and the belligerence of Peter Trego.

For Gloucester, I expect Kane Williamson will be playing, a young batsman I think has immense potential, and also a look at some of their other young hopefuls, ie Ian Saxelby (if he's fit), Liam Norwell, Will Gidman, David Payne, etc. Although they will certainly be missing the experience of Hamish Marshall, whose out for a while, and there's also a doubt over Chris Taylor, which will also be a blow given the form he's currently in.

FFS why bowl first at Taunton Tresco? Wanted to see Somerset bat before the Chelsea Manure game

Both sides bowling look pretty carp

Yes the batting line-up for Somerset looks exceptionally strong, with some exciting talent in there. Still, will get to have a look at Williamson in these conditions.

Sharp one from Kirby gets an early wicket for Somerset. Gloucester you think will need to post a very healthy total here if they are to stand any chance of defending it with a very inexperienced attack and no Jon Lewis.

Happy to see the game televised on pay-tv here in Australia - good insight into some talent coming through, not seen Buttler or Hildreth bat before, but from all reports Buttler in particular is a very impressive player.

Just out of interest, anyone know why Bell batted 3 and Trott 4 for their county in the 4 day match? Seems odd with Trott having made such a good fist of batting 3, and Bell less so.

That's just what Warks have found to over the years. Why Bell was persisted with at #3 for England for so long, and why Trott came in after him on Test debut at the Oval. Trott ended up at #3 for England almost by default as England had run out of options. Hell of a move though.

(Bairstow > Gilchrist Edit: isn't bad)

Righto, fair enough. Trott and Bell just seem so well suited to 3 and 4 respectively for mine at nearly every level of the game - love how dogged Trott is at the crease, and how elegant Bell is when in flight which I like for those positions.

Maybe because Bell was skipper and fancies himself as the number three for England. But seriously when both do play for Warwickshire, Bell always goes at three with Trott at four regardless of who captains.

Hildreth is more of a classy accumulator, while Buttler plays the more expansive game and catches the eye with a generally impressive strike rate.

Kirby still benefiting from that expensive charm school he went to, I see. Unlucky Gregory.

Reckon that Gregory looks like a talent for a bloke just under 19 - very sharp for someone that age and seems to be pretty disciplined with his line and length as well.

Interesting to watch Mendis - one of the great flashes in the pan it seems. There isn't much on what he bowls, plus there ain't a lot of revs either because he doesn't get much (/any) drift and drop.

Love how open with the face of his bat Williamson is too.

Yeah, there's been a fair bit of hype about him, but there's certainly something there, great ball to get rid of Will Gidman. Meant to be an all-rounder too.

Just looked up his profile. In his last match for the 2nd XI, he captained from #3 and hit a hundred. So, yeah.

Was getting some serious inswing; looks a big strong boy too.

Athers said in the interview Brian Rose thinks he'll eventually bat #4 or 5 in the county championship side, so he's clearly a talent.

Somerset have produced some quality youths of late: Kies, Buttler & now Gregory, it seems.

Hildreth not a veteran either yet.

This James Fuller chap (born in Cape Town, ex NZ U19 player, now performing for Glous as a non-overseas player, hmmm) looks an absolute pie chucker.

Skillfully mixing half-trackers and floaty wide half-volleys.

Tres manfully resisting the temptation to stride down the pitch every ball.

Somerset's attack showed there is a bit more pace in this pitch, then previous years. The Gloucs attack not really exploiting it. Tres and Kes playing within themselves to streak away. Wonder how many Zummerzet would have scored if they'd batted first?

Did Athers just say Kirby was a short, skiddy bowler?

6' 3" if he's an inch.

Ooops Trego goes as I type. Came down the wicket to Young and never really got over the ball.

Definite hint of Jimmeh in Gregory IMHO. Ends up with his head pointing at the floor like Anderson does and has a decent inswinger too.
