Ah, I thought that was going to be changed but the OP still says 8.

I only got 5 for it, actually.

I wonder what sledger and GS got their 8-pointers for then.

Do these Infraction points automatically show up in the locations when you get them?
If you mean do the infractions show you the post you were infracted for, they can. We can issue someone an infraction through a post, in which case the infraciton notice should provide a link to the post (I think...).

If someone's getting infracted for a combination of things rather than just a single post, we can also issue it through their profile, and then it won't have a link to a post. But every time we give an infraction we give a reason for it and so try to outline the reasons for it there.

What do you mean?

You get an email, and they show in your profile (visible only to you and the forum police)

Nah, I think he's asking if your total number of infraction points appears in your location under your avatar.

The answer is no. Some members have just decided to be dickheads and put theirs there. :p

Yep!! That was what i was asking about.:D

Seems strange for people to put their Infraction points as their locations, so thought it might be Automatically placed there.

I have a question about infractions - apologies if Furball has already posted it - it was him who first brought it to my attention.

Sledger is a good one to use an example as I believe he has an infraction expiring before his ban is up. Which means he returns on something like 13 points, IIRC.

If he is then to commit a crime against humanity such as swearing (using the filter) or swearing (avoiding the filter) he will then be infracted which would, in this scenario (and it doesn't matter if it's accurate because I'm just using him as an appropriate example) take him onto 16 points. Does he then receive another 7-dayer?

Yes, I believe that would be the case. Makes sense though - if you've just been banned you need to be on better behavior. It's sort of like being on parole.

That's my understanding as well.
Well it's a bit flawed isn't it?

Only let's take another poster who has just been banned. But his infractions aren't expiring yet. So he returns from his ban on 16 points and proceeds to call someone a ****. He goes to 21 points.

The difference as far as I can tell is that the poster in my earlier scenario has less infraction points when they return from a ban.

I dunno, maybe I'm just missing something, just a general wondering

Yea, I think the 'next level' is 30 points if I'm not mistaken (I don't think anyone's reached that yet AFAIK) - I'm sure the numbers can be tweaked so that 20 or 25 points or something triggers a longer ban rather than 30. Right now, 30 seams reasonable but I'm sure there's room for adjustment.

GIMH, your scenario is something we (the mod team) recently discussed . It is accurate to say that the poster returning with the fewer infraction points faces a quicker ban than the one who has more points. However, the poster who has more points (so greater than 15) faces a longer ban, 30 days as opposed to 7, when he/she hits the next threshold. I get the potential flaw in that, but there is not an easy way around this. For now, we have decided to leave things as is. If we feel there is a need to tweak the threshold for triggering a ban as SS suggested, we will do so and update everyone through this thread.

Yeah, fair enough.

Would it not be possible to have a system where a poster had 15 points deducted from their total when their ban ended but that the next time they reached 15 (unless it was a certain period of time later) the ban was longer, and so on?

Could see some posters use this 15 point leeway as an overdraft for acting like a ****. Me included

I see your point, but IMO the point system is meant to serve as a deterrent to breaking forum rules. Therefore someone returning from a ban should know they have a shorter leash than another member who has zero infractions. Of course, there is a way to avoid the bans altogether by just not breaking the rules in the first place. All your infractions will eventually expire and you’ll be back to zero. :p
