Rahul Dravid - What would you do? Is he still one of India's 6 best batsman?

There is no way that Ganguly would have been forced to retire due to a spat with a BCCI and he would not have taken them on in the open.

In 2002-2003, there was quite some hype surrounding Ambati Rayadu. It was felt it was only a matter of time before he got into the Indian side. He did not have a very realistic chance with the middle order India had, so it wasn't a big surprise that he didn't make the test side. What is surprising is he's never played an ODI - to put that in perspective, Rohit "I am good at IPL and nothing else" Sharma has played something like sixty or seventy ODIs!

It'd be unfair on Pujara, Kohli, Badrinath ,if he were to waltz into the Indian side ahead of them; but he should definitely be in the scheme of things whenever India decide to send second/third string elevens, etc.

TBF, to him he had a pretty good Ranji season too this time and was key in Baroda making the final.

Seems to have found a second wind coming back from the ICL.

And Raina,Uthappa and Yuvraj have all got picked for India ,with similar domestic records.

Never could go beyond scoring 25 to 35 innings.

Would still be a good t20 international ,but don't think should make any other team.

About Rayudu there is something about him that makes me believe he can be fairly successful at the highest level. Hope his less than awesome first class record does not hold him back.

Agree.

But the competition for batting places in all the Indian teams at the moment is at really ridiculous levels and he would really have to up the ante to get selected.

Yeah but he has the big advantage of being Sachin's team mate. A good word from Sachin can take him far.

Am really excited in seeing how the future middle order pans out. Loads of talent there hope at least some of them have good careers. This excitement is one reason why I want Dravid to retire.

Indian domestic batsman average ridiculous numbers. In Pakistan the only players to have first class average of above 50 are:

Hanif Mohammad
Javed Miandad
Inzamam
Younis Khan
Misbah ul haq
Fawad Alam

Apart from Fawad who is unproved all of them have had a distinguished int careers however in India I have seen domestic journeyman's averaging mid 50's.Never understood why there is such a gap in domestic averages in the 2 countries when batting conditions are so similar.

The quality of the domestic bowlers?

Not sure about Pakistan domestic cricket, but The prime Indian domestic competition(Ranji Trophy) has too many teams(Used to be more).

So there are many poor players and attacks to boost averages against and also for the bowlers there are enough poor batsman around to boost their averages and strike rates against.
Plus there is a bigger pool of players ,so even in the same ratio more people will average more.

That is why you would find both bowlers and batsman in the Indian domestic scene with good numbers.

And as for the the averages of current batsman, there are some pretty gun batsman around too in the domestic scene at the moment with somewhat justified averages.
Also India has always been better than pakistan at producing batsman, right from Vijay Hazare/Merchant days.

Xuhaib, domestic averages aren't very good indicators, unless the domestic system in question is very strong. India's isn't.
