2015 World Cup: 10 teams and no associates

You know if Irish cricket wasn't at the quality it was now there wouldn't be near this level of uproar. Gotta love that there is actually a team that really emphasizes the ridiculousness of not having qualifiers for a world cup.

Surely the ICC could get a gig at the Melbourne Comedy Festival at this rate.

The politics behind the ICC is just laughable.

That's a false comparison though, as at the Olympics you at least have to meet a minimum qualifying time regardless of what country you come from.

I appreciate though that people are likely to have different opinions to me on this.

It comes back to what you want the World Cup to be about.

For me, it is the pinnacle, the showpiece.

If I came from a non-member country however, my view would probably be different.
Have they changed the rules in the last decade or two? Anyone here remember Eddy the Eagle, or the Jamaican boblsed team, or Eric the Eel...? Not a snowballs chance of a medal but some of the most memorable athletes from olympics past. It is not always about the guy with gold around his neck...

I see on twitter, on what I assume is Tendulkar's account, the following...

.....Lets hope this Team India achievement inspires every one to believe in their dreams n abilities ......
..... and to put in the hard work necessary to chase and achieve their dreams :-)
As long as you play for a full member nation, anyway... 8-)

Why do I feel like the NZ team back in the infamous underarm ball incident. Can't win, block the ball, then throw your bat and walk off.

Sure, Australia played within the rules, just like the ICC is doing now, but it is totally against the spirit of the game!

Pretty sure they named the rule that bans crap competitors from the Olympics after Eddy the Eagle in a cheeky rubbing the salt in the wound sort of way.

What really Annoys me about all these so-called cricket fans saying this is a good thing is they seem to never have heard of the concept of sportsmanship. It seems that to these people the world cup isn't a tournament to crown the best team in the world, but instead an entertainment show where all that matters is exciting matches. What find of person actually thinks that a private members club tournament can actually be credibly called a world cup?

This is a decision which brings the whole world of sport into disrepute and the ICC should be ostracised by the worlds sports bodies as it is unfit to fulfill the remit of a governing body. A truly democratic and sportsmanship orientated organisation must be formed to give cricket any form of sporting credibly and make the world see that cricketers if not the management structure are not corrupt and actually to have a sense of fare play.

What baffles me is the idea that you know which matches are going to be exciting based on which team is playing.

Super Sixes stage was brilliant, a much longer time spent playing matches between the better teams, it ended up being great viewing. I'd wager that if India wasnt so crap in 2007 the SS stage would still be here. The rest of the world shouldnt suffer because of one team.
or maybe just maybe, it was because the format ( to be more precise the way groups were made ) in WC 2007 ( unlike in WC 1999 and WC 2003 ) was not proper ? One bad game against a minnow and you could be out of the tourney

and how are sachin's tweets even remotely relevant to the thread , which is about 2015 WC ? 8-)

And why not? What gives you a divine right to stay in a tournament when you're losing games to lower-ranked sides?

Exeter got dumped out the FA Cup a few years ago by Curzon Ashton, who were five or more divisions below us, and rightfully a side we should have put double figures on. We didn't, so we were knocked out. That's life.

don't follow football much.

Reason is in a WC, the teams should have decent chance to recover from a not so good start. It could be just one game against a minnow to get knocked in a WC grouping like the one in 2007 WC

If a team is consistently losing to lower-ranked sides, they will get knocked out in the league stage in say the league format for 99,2003,2011 WCs ...

Stuff the ICC, seriously. How can it be a World Cup if there are no qualifiers? This is why cricket will never become a truly world game, because it is run by short-sighted, greedy, insular administrators.

And Ireland is currently ranked above Zimbabwe in ODIs, yet won't play in the World Cup? How does that work?

This has shaken my confidence in the cricket, and indeed possibly reduced my love of our great game.

I understand why the Irish are so upset.

The minnow played better than you, so too bad for you.

South Africa topped their group yet were knocked out in the QF against NZ. That wasn't fair, or was it? You may as well say the World Cup should simply be a league with no knock-out games and whoever tops the league wins the tournament.

The 2002 French team would agree with you. It's a cup, not a league. You lose, you're out. Simplesss

so that the best teams - allowing for a 'slow start' - can finally face off for the ultimate prize , that is the WC trophy. Just having a league won't have the same excitement

when I say I don't follow football much , is it too much to expect to not bring in football in reply ? 8-)

@ bold part: but how many losses ? If the minnows are really good enough, they should be able to beat the the other teams consistently to make it to the next stage, just one odd upset shouldn't be enough
