Adieu Murali

Not talking about players who played almost all their careers in ATG teams otherwise Marshall has a fair shot at it too. Fairy tales have some ups and downs too.

Would rate Warne's career to be more fairytale than McGrath's.

I think vcs meant McGrath had a fairytale ending to his career and, signing off from tests with the first Ashes whitewash in 80+ years and from ODIs as world champion and the tournament's highest wicket taker it's hard to argue otherwise.

No, McGrath was an ever-present in Australia's success.. even more so than Warne. Finished as top wicket-taker and MoTS in WC 2007, doesn't get much better than that. Took a wicket with his last Test delivery at his homeground Sydney, took a wicket with his last ODI delivery on Australian soil (again at Sydney I think), took a wicket with his penultimate ODI delivery in the WC final, won his 3rd WC and ****ed off into the horizon. A collective sigh of relief was heaved by batsmen all over the world.

TBF Warne too was part of that whitewash. In fact, if anything, Warne had almost lost his bowling to a very serious injury (the adversity that is always part of fairytales). Coming back from serious injury is a tough ask and few bowlers have managed to do that successfully.

hmmm......a very impressive array of accolades indeed. However it has to be borne 1999 WC Warne was the one who got them into the game in the SF. McGrath was not too stellar IIRC. Plus Warne got 4 wickets in the final too in that WC. Warne has an excellent ODI record too, not too much less than McGrath and Warne definitely a big match player as well.

Congrats on your career Murali. The numbers speak for themselves, and apparently a lovely gracious boke.

For what it is worth, fans and media should let him go off into the sunset and don't call for his return, no matter how dire his replacements might be. Some Australians are still dreaming/thinking about Warne's return, especially during the recent Ashes.
Counterprductive IMHO.

Adieu Murali What an awesome cricketer and what an entertainer Always played with a smile on his face A real special person. Nice that we will see him in the IPL for some more time. Also love him more for being a CSK champion.

WAG. Possibly the best spinner we'll see in our lives, and easily one of the biggest gentlemen to play the game in recent years. Will be sorely missed.

Wonder what he'll do now. Hard to see him not doing something cricket related, he's such a cricket geek. Should post on CW tbh.

I will add this to all of these 9 year old well wishers.

Murali was one of the most likeable guys in test cricket. He took criticism of his action with better grace than can be reasonably expected. He was easily and by far the best off spinner in the sport's history, the highest wicket taker by a very long way and was a great ambassador for the sport.

Here's to a legend of the game.

I must admit that it was Graeme Swann who gave Indian team more sleepless nights than both Murali and Warne.

Agree with much of this, and would only add that it's not his fault he was allowed to play at any level, let alone international. And good on him for doing his best once he did.

Not when India played in SL. If some one needs that distinction it were Saqlain and Mendis, who bamboozled top Indian lineups and made them look utterly stupid. But Swann, yes, was bloody good. Once again a non classical off spinner who had a different grip.

Whatever it takes!!!
Tbh, Monty was more threatening than Swann in the 2012 series.

And Murali is the greatest spinner of all time. The actual GOAT.
