***Official*** Australian Domestic Season 2010/11

International Coach
Great end to the season for Hughesy, shows great resilience and character on his part to put such strong performances back-to-back when pretty much everyone was starting to write him off due to his horrible form this season.

Well done to the Tigers as well, under George Bailey they have really grown into an all round unit and truly deserve this success.

Also would anyone confirm this, I read this somewhere but is Mark Cosgrove really the highest scorer in Shield cricket this season..?

Yup. Also notable is that despite his horror start and missing a lot of the season with Australia, Hughes still ended up 6th.

Here's
the leading wicket-takers. Butterworth, Maher and Faulkner 1st, 3rd and 4th.

"also, backs rookies brinsley, cranmer, davies, moffat axed, surely along with many senior guys""

Moffatt axed he and smith we're the main rungetters in the futures.
Gather james smith will be cut with an import in mind.
Might have to lose a contract to make way for fergo likely to lose national contract to dave hussey.
i think rob cassell, chris duvall and tim lang cut.

Extremely unlikely that Cassell will be cut. I thought he had a decent season considering it has been eight years away from Shield cricket.

Hard to read into his dropping at season end. SA tried some different combinations like giving Richardson a proper crack and looking at the spin combo. I would still have Cassell in my first choice SA XI.

tbh, can't see SA cutting too many players. Why bother? There's no-one from grade cricket to replace them so unless some of the imports who've been here for a couple of years want to move on.....

Borgas or Moffat's contract could fund the import batter they'll be looking for but I dunno, don't think they'll be chasing any more bowlers. I mean, fully fit, you have Richardson, George, Cassell, Putland, Lyon, Haberfield, O'Brien and Christian to work with. That's plenty for a decent coach/set-up to build the next couple of seasons on. As far as the batting goes, I'd like to see another young specialist batter or two given a go next season. This means dropping one of the all-rounders and I think it'll be O'Brien.

Dunno what plans there are for the 'keeper next season but I'd be hesitant to bat Ludeman or Crosswaite (if he comes over) at 6. They're probably good enough but backing up at 6 after a long, hot Adelaide day is a big ask.

Agreed. Crosswaite should be given a go in both of the shorter formats if he moves to SA. I'd like to see Ludeman take the gloves in first class cricket though.

I personally think SA should target Peter Forest if they are after young specialist batsmen.

Anyone know what's going on with Burt ****ley? Haven't seen or heard anything of him since his back injury in late 2009. Big shame, he looked a great prospect to me and he'd still only be 25 or so off the top of my head.

Made a return in January from stress fractures in his back. Playing grade cricket he ruptured his AC and I believe he is unlikely to be fit for the start of 2011/2012 season.

Edit: Found a link. Sounds like a real freak injury. Tough luck for a very promising bowler.

Tough life being a fast bowler. You just be seriously jacked off if you went India in 09 as backup seamer, only to find you dont play a match, and dont even bowl again for 2 years! Reminds me of Dizzy's horror run of injuries after his debut test in 1996, insane run of bad luck culminating in the freak broken leg in Kandy.

If his career pans out like Dizzy's then I won't be complaining.

True. Always remember first seeing Dizzy bowl for SA in 1994, true medium pacer, nothing special. I recall an article at some stage around late 94 or early 95 from the Sa coach saying that he'd had enough with medium pacers, and he only wanted fast bowlers. Next season Dizzy is RIPPING them down, think his body objected for awhile while he attempted to be a true fast bowler, which he was for sure up until around 2002.

Can confirm the Bomber story, played with a few blokes in the set-up at the time. Bloke was a hard nut but got SA to a Shield final one year and won it the next.

Wouldn't call Gillespie medium pace when he first started, though. He was fast-medium at best when he played his first season of Shield cricket. Check him out bowling here and here (great nut) in his 3rd match for SA, the Shield final (was about 20?). Not express but quick enough.

Yeah I guess he was a little faster than medium, I recall the first match he actually played for Australia, though not an official match - the World XI vs Australia at the MCG in 1996 a few weeks after the 96 World Cup final, he was pretty fast that day, had Martin Crowe in all sorts, Richie Richardson too. Dean Jones couldnt even lay bat on ball and was playing and missing everywhere, still Deano scraped to a ton, his ONLY ton in any international match at the MCG, insane.

I recall that World XI game. It was played to celebrate 100/125/150 (I have no idea) years of Victorian cricket?

I remember Mark Taylor hitting a seriously big six over mid wicket way back into the crowd, off Shaun Pollock, incredible hit for someone like him!!!! In the crowd in that area of the G is a massive hit. Reminds me of another huge six at the G, Roger Harper in 95/96 off the bowling of Michael Bevan, enormous slog over mid wicket to the other side of the G, way way back in the crowd.

Speaking of Bevan, and also getting further sidetracked, anyone bothered to check my 1994 Aus tour of Pakistan vid, where Bevan takes his first test wicket bowling left arm fast medium......
