Good to see Hughes finding form, too bad it's at the end of the season though. Does anyone know if he's resigned for a county deal this year?

Great knock by Hughes. What an important game for him to find some touch again. All summer his technique has been badly exposed. NSW in a great position to pile on a big lead.

I still don't think he will retain his Test place, although this innings will go a long to ensuring he retains his CA contract

At this stage, however, I would say that is not guaranteed.

The Prince.

Remarkable that someone with the footwork he employs can on drive so well from quicks. Shows what happens when blokes hit form... Those glaring frailties seem to disappear. He looks so solid with his footwork so far (though I didn't see the early stages tbf).
When he gets forward and driving he's bloody good. Awesome to see him back... although interesting that the Katman at the other end is letting everyone know he's still around :p

How has Butterworth and Faulkner pace been?
Hughes seems to have a knack for making 100 when they will be valued highly.

Seems a pretty strange decision given the way the game's gone to send NSW in - was the pitch quite green?

Average first score down there is like 175. Pitch has been green all season. Looked less-so today though.

Terrific first day of the Shield final.

The outcome of the match dependent on how quickly Tasmania can roll through the rest of the NSW lower order in the morning. Hilfenhaus has been a real flop this summer (I remember many at the start of the summer predicting this to be his breakout year). A terrible Ashes followed by some very poor stuff for Tasmania. Constantly being out bowled by Butterworth, Maher and Faulkner.

Tasmania should fancy any target lower than 400. It won't be easy for NSW if Tasmania can build a partnership as the bowling is quite thin outside of O'Keefe and Copeland. NSW will miss Henriques purely for his ability to relieve one of the other bowlers. I think it is a big ask of Cummins or Coyte to carry much of the attack.

Made sense at the beginning of the day; every Shield game at Bellerive this season has been won by the team bowling first.

Looking forward to catching some of this final tomorrow on Fox, feeding into tomorrow night's marque Aust v Pakistan joust.

You're all welcome over, except Craigos.

Why does Coyte still get a FC game with NSW? With their depth of talent surely there's a number of better options...

The following NSW quicks are currently unavailable due to injury:

Doug Bollinger
Stuart Clark
Mark Cameron
Mitchell Starc
Josh Hazelwood
Moises Henriques
Burt ****ley

There might be a couple I've forgotten, too. Coyte is crap and I would've definitely considered playing Bills ahead of him but there's a good reason he's playing (this time).

This is another issue I touch on in my Ashes Aftermath - Australian Cricket Under the Microscope essay.

The incredible number of injuries, and the lack of cricket fitness among the troops.

Release date - May 1.
