Palace fan?

Team of the 80s, etc.
Yup. Team of the 80s was always a silly tag, not least as everyone knew that the team of the 80s was going to still be Liverpool. But the speed of our decline in 1980/81 still came as a surprise. The 1990/91 team was actually far superior - 3rd in the old 1st division was by far our best end of season position - but that went downhill sharpish too. Didn't help that your lot kept pinching our best players: Sansom in 1980, Wright in 1991.

Beyond that, it's occasional highlights in the 1970s. The Peter Taylor inspired cup run in 1976, and putting five past Man. Utd in 1972, with Don Rogers at the absolute peak of his powers. I was there for that, fwiw.

We did give you Clive Allen, tbf and very sportingly actually paid cash money for Eddie McGoldrick.

Was devastated when you couldn't hang on versus ManUre in (IIRC) 1990 so must've been genuinely heart-breaking for a fan. Again, if memory serves it was Wrighty's first game back after a broken leg and he bagged a couple as sub.

Fergie's first trophy for the Evil Empire too. Sigh.

All true. Unfortunately, Allen's claim to fame at the Palace was that goal against Coventry which the ref thought had hit the woodwork when in fact it bounced back out of the goal after hitting the stancheon. No wonder he didn't see the point in bothering after that.

As for the 1990 cup final, yup, we should have won the first game. Especially as you know full well as a Palace fan that these occasions aren't going to happen again in your lifetime. The team from 12 months later would definitely have held on for the win, with Andy Thorne and Eric Young looking after central defence.

We never did a thing against Arsenal though. I remember our last game of the 1992/93 season was at Highbury, needing Southampton to beat Oldham unless we got something at your place. Le Tissier got a hat-trick, but Oldham still won. Naturally we didn't trouble the scorers and down we went. Other than that, I remember Wright's return to Selhurst Park - equally naturally he scored the winner. He was a seriously good player.
