Because clearly, calling someone an idiot on the forum is different than calling Dravid an idiot for playing a stupid shot. Dravid isn't here and won't insult you back, and it won't lead to the thread going to hell.
Lol that's not the point

The point is buffoon isn't an offensive word but you lot have outlawed it because some people took offence to it

Similarly, you don't think some of the trolling posts were offensive but some of us do so...

Please point out the post where any member of the mod team has outlawed the word 'buffoon.' As we've said time and time again in the thread, you can't use the word to directly insult people or as a baiting attempt, but the same goes for any word. This isn't the first time we've made this distinction in the thread; if it's something you still don't understand, feel free to contact me via FB or something but I feel like we've made it pretty clear that our issue wasn't with the word itself, but with the context that it was used in.

You're taking me too literally. I just mean that you've decided calling people a buffoon is offensive.

Making posts in the middle of a game between two teams involved and calling a player,a team, or a play stupid or minnow cricket, is generally not going to be trolling. If a person can't handle a team being called a minnow when it plays like one, then perhaps that person should refrain from reading match threads..
So if somebody comes into a thread and starts posting like a **** we're all allowed to call them one? If they can't take it then maybe the should refrain from posting like an idiot.

You can't seriously say "Well if people get worked up by stuff like that maybe they shouldn't open the thread." Why does it work for what you have to say but not what others have to say?

Nope, we made it regarding personal insults. Ignore them, report the post, etc.

Because again, personal insults are generally different than commenting on a cricket team, even if you don't like the comment.

Unless of course you think someone calling Indian pace bowlers ****, or using 'idiot' when someone plays a bad shot is the same as someone calling you or another member that. They are not equivalent and I doubt anybody wants them treated as such.

Its a ****ing joke SS. Broken record alert but buffoon is not an insult. The english language does not classify it as one. So why are people entitled to get offended by it?

Trolling in the heat of a WC match is ten times worse than calling someone a buffoon or making a post saying 'Tendy is a buffoon'. Stop acting like ostriches; wake up and realise your system is a huge joke.

Calling England minnows in ODIs when since 2007 we've beaten everyone except New Zealand at least once in a bilateral series and gone 18 months between losing 6-1 to Australia after both recent Ashes series without losing a series in any form of the game is moronic, and it is trolling. It's like me going into a thread and constantly calling Tendulkar an over-rated hack and a rubbish batsman. It's patently not true and is going to wind people up.
Yes, I do know what you are saying, and it's a case by case basis we look at. Generally, in most cases, making comments that a team isn't good in a match thread isn't going to be infracted.

Also, regardless of whether you agree, you guys have had a bunch of time now to keep using that word in different contexts as part of your efforts to try to do whatever it is you're doing. You've played it out enough.

Move on. Seriously.

Calling someone a fool is not an insult?

FFS SS. No offence but for someone so intelligent you don't half miss the point sometimes.

At this point I don't care which words you do and don't allow, I just wish to point out thw arbitary inconsistency you are promoting. If you are going to infract for words that aren't insults (I'll get to that in a minute) on the basis that some soft ****s might get offended by them, then how the **** do you justify a bunch of posting that clearly caused offence against some England supporters? You can't justify it other than by deciding to call us precious or whatever it was you said, which btw could be construed as an insult.

As for buffoon. Sick of the word myself, just FTR. But so you know, it does not have the same meaning as fool. It means someone who does silly things, usually to make people laugh. Like a sledger or Burgey I guess. I use it when my children do something silly - give me the context BS all you want but you think I'd throw actual insults at three of the people I actually give a **** about?

You lot have made a ****ing forum announcement declaring it an insult and we've had people like Migara decrying it as an attack but it's not. In the context which it was used when this train was set in motion Burgey was justified in saying it because Migara was taking a stance that led one to believe he was surely joking.

I don't care about that anymore but I do care about your hypocritical inconsistencies that are ruining the forum.

Meh, monkey isn't offensive in India. My dad called me a monkey all the time when I did silly things - like a monkey.

1. Personal insults are different than someone saying your team sucks. I don't know why this is a difficult concept. If I tell Jono in a match thread that his favorite bowler is bowling like an idiot and his teamm sucks, its different than calling Jono an idiot and saying he sucks. I'm sorry, but it just is.

2. I am so tired of this word but my thesaurus here says one of the synonyms is a fool. But whatever, the response had been way overstated. The word when used by sledger wasn't infracted because he insulted a player, while another poster I think has a warning. All this hoopla over such a minor matter is ridiculous.

Attached below is how Merriam Webster defines buffoon.

So even the technical definition defines it as a freaking insult! Unless you think equating someone with “a gross and usually ill-educated or stupid person” is a compliment. Give me a break. But you are intelligent enough to know that even the technical definition doesn’t really matter. It was used as an insult by Burgey. Not as a term of endearment. You trying to twist it to something else is frankly perplexing to me.

Also, I’m baffled at what you are trying to achieve by going on and on about this issue. I thought Andy did a great job of addressing the complaints cited by various parties and stating how we will try to improve it here. To summarize: We are sensitive to your perceptions of inconsistency and will try our best to be more transparent. However, we are not changing our decision regarding the buffoon posts. Burgey only received a warning, and Sledger got a 5 point infraction. Neither of them were banned! Seriously it’s time to move on.

Oh and I'm done with this issue here. You are welcome to respond but I've put my views as best as I can and if it doesn't get across, I'm sorry but I don't think I can say it any differently. I am going to go enjoy some cricket. Send me msn/email if you want to talk personally.

What the **** is webster's dictionary? The forum language is English and I took my definition from Cambridge.

The England team wasn't just criticised in that thread btw we were completely trolled. I have agreement off the forum from other India fans that this occurred. But you keep going with your straw man argument. I'm obviously still trying to get sledger's infraction overturned and not talking about the ridiculous standards you lot are setting.

How did infractions turn such a good team of mods into a collectively self-righteous lot? At least candy was polite but whatever.

Head in sand, defend every decision you've made, you've not got anything wrong. Obviously. I am literally the only person complaining!

Seriously haven't noticed the infraction system affect the forum tbh, not sure what all the fuss is about.

Well, I'm just glad I don't waste my time with Cricket Chat anymore given the crap that seems to go on in match threads. Just wondering if I can call anyone 'obtuse' - or will they get upset by it? The Warden in Shawshank obviously thought it was a massive insult as he locked Andy du Fresne away in the hole for weeks for calling him 'obtuse' - would other people's sensibilities be similarly compromised? Could we have a list of what terms are allowed or not allowed?

Frankly, I think you're all a bunch of silly-billies for the last 5 pages. I'd call some of you wally-bonces but that might be a bit strong.

You're an Indian fan though, there's a massive, massive difference between you doing that and me doing that.

Whatever India's over-rated hacks put up, England should comfortabl chase down. Bangladesh took 289 off them without trying ffs.

Just wondering - isn't that, by your definition, trolling as well ? I know you said pages later in that thread that you didn't mean it, but isn't that they the very definition of trolling ? Posting something to rile others ?

Also, since you seem to be taking someone calling England minnows so seriously, here is Sledger calling India minnows in another thread :

Seriously, why can't we all lighten up ? I never thought anyone would take an internet forum so seriously. Pages and pages of discussion over the term 'buffoon' and this ?

I haven't been here long enough, but I feel the moderators are doing a brilliant job. I have moderated forums before (much smaller ones) and, trust me, it's a bloody thankless job. You just can't please everyone. This is a brilliant site with brilliant posters; let's all get along guys. :)

Spot on. Pretty much stole the words right outta' my mouth. And I'm sure a large majority of members agree with this, and that the moderators are doing a great job, one that is not easy at all.
