Not enough to make my top 20 or 25 cricketers of all time, no.

Using your line of reasoning, before Gilchrist arrived on the scene, someone would have to make an all time world XI as a wicket-keeper? So he had to be ranked in top 20-25 cricketers? After Gilchrist, he vanished from top 20-25 all together rather than slipping by one position? Sounds weird to me.

For any wicketkeeper to be put in that bracket, including Gilchrist, there should be an argument better than that he makes the all time XI.
To be a 'great' you have to be in the top echelon of something, in this case keer. Before Gilchrist came along, the benchmark for keeper/batsmen were lower. Since then, Gilchrist has raised the mark to the point where the keeper/batsmen that went before are no longer great because they don't match up to Gilchrist's standards.

If say in 50 years time we go through some miraculours stage where there are 40 players better than Tendulkar, then Sachin no long becomes a great. But that's a hypothetical.

Sobers as a bowler(Okay, perhaps he wasn't as below average a bowler as the stats tell us, Maybe he was better than that but some make it sound like the Greek Goddess Hera stripped and danced evertime he bowled)
Maybe she did tbh. Ask people who watched him.

With Burg on Tendulkar. All-time great bat, but one of many really. As an overall player, inferior to many of those same all-time great bats.

Also someone who has started to get annoyingly overrated IMO is Kallis. For most of his career he was underrated, now too much is made of him IMO.

Sobers, of course, as well. I can accept he is one of the all-time great all-rounders...but the way he is praise, and rated, you'd think he was Warne, Marshall and Ponting in one.

See, exhibit A above.

Tendulkar may (debatable) be better than Sobers, Kallis, Ponting or Hammond, as some examples, as a batsman, but as a player he is not close.

was talking strictly about batting

P.S. Not sure why burgey is ranting - there isn't that much of sachin fan posts here , compared to many of the other places online

He was before your time, but one person actually did think that. Partly because he takes FCA and FPT for granted too much.
As you all know i am quite happy to lay into you Aussies when you deserve some stick but the team of the 90's don't, they were so far superior to England back then it was untrue. There were times i wondered if we'd ever win another series such was the strength you had in those days. You were the best side in the world and if you put out a 2nd string you'd have probably beaten everyone bar South Africa.

Tendulkar, easily. Far and away the most over rated player here. You'd think he farted incense the way people talk about him. I recall discussion on here where Sreesanth was criticized for daring to bowl to him in a domestic match and having the sheer gall to, brace yourselves, stare at the great man.

Sreesanth was rightly condemned by all of CW for being so uppity. Ain't but no one stares at Sachin.

He has dominated every bowler, everywhere. The only time McGrath got him out was due to a bad decision- the 99-00 series in Australia will forever be known as the "get Sachin" series - the umpires cheated to remove him cheaply. We won't talk about the 2001 "Get Gilchrist" series.

He has won every world cup and test match he played in, and has secured MOtM in all of them. There is a queue from Sydney to Mumbai waiting to have his babies. I, for one, am at the head of it. It's the only head I'll have for quite some time I imagine.

Sachin also has by far the best haircut of any cricketer, ever. He's taken so many odi wickets he's a better all rounder than Sobers, and dare I say it, may even be approaching Imran status.

You ask how I know this? statsguru told me. I'm only 17 or 18, but a glance at statsguru imbues me with the knowledge and ability to read a game of the great Richie Benaud who, to the extent that his views differ from mine, is plainly starstruck in holding Ray Lindwall and Keith Miller so highly. I, by contrast, am in no way star struck by Sachin, or indeed by any one else. It's just coincidence that I think the 90s is the greatest decade of cricket ever, and I happened to grow up in that very decade.

Agree. This forum knows nothing about the extents to which Sachin hero-worship can go. At least none of the regular posters do anything of that sort. There are those casual followers who think he is the greatest thing to have happened to cricket even when they don't know who Gary Sobers was. I have met plenty of them.

after the 2010 he had im comfortable rating tendulkar as number 2 of all time. dude debuted at 16 ffs because of how crappy the team was lmao.he was gonna debut at 15 but they thought he wouldn't be able to handle marshall and ambrose.

and imo gilchrist is slightly over-rated. for me Flower>gilchrist.

Um whether you agree with him that sachin is #2 or not it's clearly not an extreme opinion as many respected people have him there (Eg Benaud). He maybe right and he may be wrong but it's poor form to suggest point to that post as "exhibit A" as if it's something totally ridiculous.

ponting? not sure that either ponting or kallis belongs in the batsmen comparison.

and even more debatable is whether ponting is as good an overall cricketer as tendulkar, leave alone being considerably superior.

I personally think Hobbs, Sobers and Chappell are ahead of Tendy but this pseudo-elitist anti-sachin brigade that's beginning to form is quite a bit more annoying than the mythical sachin is th best ever brigade that's trotted out as a strawman.

Having hung around a few forums before coming to CW, there are definately places where the Sachin-heals-Lazarus crowd exists. Doesn't really happen here though.

No, it's fine to have him #2 batsman of all-time; there are many candidates for that. But when he is voted in the top handful of cricketers/players of all-time I begin to feel he is definitely overrated. He was a fantastic batsman, but that is pretty much it. For me, the likes of Sobers, Hammond and even Ponting were more impressive cricketers...by that I mean it's not even that close.

In the post you quote I obviously thought the poster in question was referring to Tendulkar as an overall player; but he was merely talking him up as a batsman. FTR, I find it just as annoying having to hear that Tendulkar isn't overrated. You're almost never going to hear people seriously say Viv Richards, Lara, Ponting or Warne are better players than Bradman...but you do hear people saying that with Tendulkar, and with a straight face. That says it all, really.

Applies also to Warne and Lillee vis-à-vis Imran and Hadlee? 8-)

ikki,

while i do agree that tendulkar does have a slightly more strident bunch of fanatics to hosanna every twitch of his, i think that the husseins and hadlees (and there are some other excricketers out there, non indian ones, too) of the cricketing commentating and writing firmament also deserve cesnure for maintaining a poker face while anointing tendulkar the preeminent batsmen of them all.

it's not just the average joe who is guilty of this, u know.

perhaps there is something about tendy...!

also, out of curiosity, i do wonder why ponting is considered by u to be a far superior cricketer than tendulkar. are tendulkar's wickets worth so much less than ponting's fielding, such that the difference in their batting is completely blown away? it's not like tendulkar was exactly a camel in the field.
