A gaping hole in his resume.
Should it really diminish from all his other feats though? It sounds like spotting one weakness in his record and discounting it against all the other positives. Steve Waugh didn't have a great record against Pakistan, but he was hardly a failure. Rawalpindi in 1998 must surely be one of Steve Waugh's finest innings.

Even small holes in his record become significant when comparing to a batsman of such calibre though.

No doubt AB played against the Windies of 70s and 80s but he didn't play much against Waqar and Wasim at their peak, Donald, de Villiers and Pollock at their peak, Murali at his peak, and of course the Windies of 80s including Marshall, Walsh, Patterson, Ambrose, etc. These bowlers were deadly till the early 2000s. Waugh actually played against the most dangerous bowlers of all time for more time than any other great. Even Tendulkar didn't get to play against 80s Windies bowling attack.

Honestly, either answer is correct; it's that close imo. Waugh faced some truly great attacks and did well, but so too did Border. The only team Border did poorly against was RSA and that was literally at the end of his marathon career so I donot hold that against him.

Closer than some people think. But Border having to play in a weaker side and being more consistent across his career are tiebreakers.

Border. Carried a weak lineup, and had success higher up the order when called up unlike Waugh. Overall, just had a tougher job to do.
And like you said the other week, Waugh averaging below 40 in his first sixty Tests shouldn't be completely ignored. Border was a 50-bat throughout more or less.

Amazing players. Would be so great at 5 and 6 in a 1980-2000 Aussie team. (G.Ghappell will be the obvious choice in the middle order. Mark Waugh and Dean Jones to fight for the other slot. Taylor and Boon to open).

Both were fighters. Batted superbly with the tail. Did well in all conditions. Had superior records away from home. Scored lots and lots of centuries and half centuries.

I would go for Border because his record is well rounded. Steve Waugh struggled in SL. And didnt do well against Pakistan at home. There are no such obvious chinks in AB's resume. His record against SA is from too late in his career to be reflective of his ability. Loved both. But choosing AB over anyone is natural for me.
