Yes but there was no evidence whether it would be a reasonable call (no-one did) so it remains an incorrect call regardless of whether Lyon does well.

To be fair I actually agreed with you that it was unlikely once I thought about it (and who was picking the side..) properly. Still felt it was the right option, however.

Wait a sec, according to cricket.com.au, this is the line-up;

Smith
Harris
Klinger
Blizzard
Christian
O'Brien
Manou
Haberfield
Cassel
Lyon
George
Richardson (12th)

Please tell me they've not gone into a Shield match with only 4 specialist batters and/or are going to bat Manou, O'Brien or Christian at 5.

Hoping someone's mistaken Haberfield for Borgas. Both tall and lean so it's possible...

Maybe they just think O'Brien and Christian are the fifth and sixth best available batsmen in the state now. They're good grade batsmen so it's possible; pretty sad state of affairs if true though.

Really though, even if they were, you'd think their allround skills would make Borgas or Moffat of more value to the team than Haberfield.

Geez, wish I could see this game. WA rattling along at 5+ per over but are two down. The commentary is like a shooting gallery.

Is Berry still SA coach or was that just for the T20?

Christian has had a great summer in the Shield with the bat from memory, not suprised they'll bat him at 5.

Not sure if you're aware and just can't use it for whatever reason, but there's live streaming on the CA site. Some real loose stuff in the first five overs from both bowlers but they've found their length a bit since then and look dangerous - kind of what you'd expect from George and Cassell at this point, I guess.

Dunno about it being 'great'. 'Better than usual' maybe.

He's a good enough bat, though, so let's see how he goes with the promotion.

Jeff Vaughan's coach today. Christian's averaging 33 with the bat in the Shield this season; dominated the Ryobi Cup though IIRC.

Yeah just had a look at the numbers for the summer - knew he had been quality in one form or another with the bat, turns out it was the OD's. But yeah, definitly good enough to bat 5 I reckon.

International Coach
Got to hand it to Greg Shipperd, the man certainly has an eye for talent and he is arguably the main factor behind Vics evolving as such a strong side over the years.

I once heard him talking Maxwell up as a very dynamic all-round player and a talent to watch out for, at that time I kind of laughed it off but now I can certainly see what he was taking about.

Also feeling sad for Cossie, it seems he would pile on runs season after season but still would never be considered for higher honours and its just a shame.

State Captain
Pretty good start to Nathan Lyon's first class career. North, Voges and Pomersbach in his first spell, day 1 at the WACA.

Yeah I hope Lyon gets a 5 for!

I can't believe the batting lineup that SA have fielded, hopefully the top order see off the new ball, or they'll be in trouble.

That Coulter-Nile excites me a bit, I was pretty annoyed that Saj ****ing Mahmood was keeping him out in the Big Bash.

WA are all out tbh. Lyon ended up with 4; was unlucky not to have Hogan though; he was just running down the wicket and trying to hit him into the stands for that over he faced. Unluckily for Lyon, he kept middling it. :p

Yeah I know they are all out now, but when I wrote that message they were 9 fa on the cric aus website, for some reason I can't view the stream.

4/81 on debut at the WACA is a very solid effort. It'll be interesting to see how the 'Test' spinner Beer bowls..
