I agree you with you for both formats, but I guess it also depends on the opposition's score if chasing or the target you want to set when batting first (for bowling friendly pitches). maybe take a few more calculated risks for ODIs

couple of years ago, right?

They would on average have about a game every three years rained out.

We seem to have every third game rained out.
You do realise that this is the first game since India toured in 2009 that has been cancelled due to rain?

Think its daft that Ryder's been rotated out. The guy is just coming back into form (at a pretty crucial time), and he gets left out? Gah.

game has evolved, batsmen have to take risks right from bowl 1 cause no total is safe on flat pitch v good team

What the hell is going on?? Franklin should not be opening the bowling. Whats wrong with Vettori?? Open with Bennett and Southee, Franklin should only be in the team as a batsman. And get Adam Milne. NZ must unleash the fury.

I think it's just something they're trying out before the world cup because Mills and Southee will probably be the ones to have the new ball. I think they're seeing if Franklin can take a wicket or get away with a few cheap overs with the new ball. If they can then they may be able divide 10 between him Styris and any other legitimate bat who can turn his arm over.

I think it's at the very least an interesting strategy.

I think dropping Ryder is the worst part. It sounds like Ryder-Guptill is the World Cup opening partnership, so why break that up after their first match batting together?!

Maybe How is just joining the new setup for the first time and is getting the go ahead Wright away so to speak. Can't see him playing any more of the series after this.

It was supposed to be a seven match series initially, wasn't it ?
I think it was supposed to be a 5 or 3 match series. Not sure. The original schedule included 3 Test Matches, but that was changed later to accommodate more ODIs for WC practice. You know, since the pitches in India/Sri Lanka/Bangladesh or so similar to New Zealand.

So will McCullum or How open tomorrow?
According to this article How will open with Guptill:
New Zealand news: Martin Guptill cherishes new role | Cricket News | New Zealand v Pakistan | ESPN Cricinfo
However, Guptill, who signed to play for Derbyshire, will open with Jamie How in the third ODI against Pakistan on Saturday as a result of New Zealand's rotation policy for the series.

In: Mills, Williamson, Woodcock
Out: Franklin, Ryder, Vettori

Not a fan of this rotation.
Me either. The time for experimentation with combinations should have been back during the sub-continent series. I would have preferred that this series would be used to give the first choice 11 players some game time together, in a settled lineup.

My problem with rotation is that there simply isn't enough time to make an informed decision about any of the possible combinations before the World Cup. Ryder and Guptill went well together, but it was chasing a tiny total against a second string attack. McCullum hasn't even had an opportunity yet to be tried down the order. Woodcock will be playing his first ODI, and the issue of where How will bat only muddies things further. How much can we really learn from one game, especially when the conditions in India are so markedly different to what's on offer here? And then there's the issue of Williamson and where he might bat should he be required. The selectors say he should bat in the middle, but if that's the case why has ND persisted with playing him at number 3?

The whole thing has the air of a panicking student madly cramming in the last 2 days before their final exam, after weeks of procrastination. Really we should've been working on a core group of players over at least the past 12 months, and testing different combinations over that time. I know things haven't been easy, we've had 4 coaches in the last 18 months afterall, but wildly scrambling about, trying every possible combination Wright and Vettori can think of doesn't strike me as the solution. At the very least, for the last 3 games of the series, they need to pick their starting World Cup side and stick with it. For better or for worse, we need our frontline team to get some gametime together.

Are you really worried about McCullum down the order? I'm not tbh. He'll just play the way he always has done.

Ryder and Guppy opening together should still be established but both have batted well at the top and have a fair bit of experience doing it now even if it hasn't all been together.

Woodcock and How are some legitimate concerns. Wouldn't have taken How personally and Woodcock still would have been a fringe call even though he is a Wellington gun.

Works a dream for me.

But would it still work if it was before 9 consecutive exams, between each of which there was absolutely no chance of further study?
