I can't believe you believe the **** you read by these journalists.
I'm not talking about underwear modelling, or arranging dates for Steve Smith, but some of the things of substance.

- He didn't fly home from NZ?
- He didn't go to the Boxing Day breakfast?
- Tim Lane made up the stuff about not being on the team bus?
- Kat flew off the handle at him for no reason?

I just think, it's more nuanced than just dismissing anything negative said about his off field stuff as 'gossip or rubbish'.

Was it T_C that suggested that there was a minor split in the team between the "old guard" and those who more or less Clarke captained in the U19 WC? Ie. most of the team younger than 30
From memory, I only noted how many of the players in the current team also played under Clarke at U/19 level vs those who are older and how the press groups the two together in talking about them. Dunno if there's anything to it.

Dorries is a ****.

Yeah, fair enough.

The scant evidence available (ie on Twitter etc) do suggest that the younger blokes or newer blokes like Smith, Hughes etc. are firmly under Clarke's wing.

Really couldn't give a flying about the Twitter stuff. Even when it was after his dismissal in the Adelaide Test.

Personally, I do think that it was wrong to be going to the breakfasts before a day of Test cricket. You don't leave yourself open to criticism, and that was always going to come under the microscope if on-field didn't go well.

More to the point, this whole "find Steve a date" thing is precisely the kind of thing that one would see from Swann/Anderson/Finn on their Twitters. Hasn't everyone been praising their team spirit all summer?

- He flew home from NZ because he was having a major issue with his fiance. He came back and made a hundred.
- He did do the BD breakfast. Probably a wrong move, but he was helping out charity for a friend.
- Tim Lane wouldn't know his arse from his face.
- How many people were in the change rooms with the Katich issue?

The only problem I have with Clarke's off field stuff is that he hangs around with Warne too much, who has the potential to instill counter-productive attitudes in people.

Either way, Australia are 3-0 up. Team must be doing something right.

Tremlett has been copping stick from the crowd all summer. If I didn't believe he was a robot and incapable of feeling emotions, I'd feel sorry for the big guy.

If I had a mug like Smith and my captain found me a date I'd kiss the ground he walked on. Great man management imo.

Hasn't really got a mention up here. Why's he getting a bit? Might be a 6' 8" brick outhouse, but he's a fairly gentle soul is Tremmers.

Just his general refusal to interract with the crowd I think.

tbf, I've only been to two days cricket this year (day one of the Sydney test and yesterday), but both of those days Tremlett has been fielding on the boundary. Crowd have been trying to get something out of him, he gives them nothing, they give him stick. Pretty standard stuff, must grow tired of it though.

That got suggested in the funny-at-the-time-and-now-hilarious "North as future captain" article

Just reading through the comments on that article, and it's many types of awesome to see Dorries copping an absolute shellacking over it. Still a few nutters in there who for whatever reason think it's relevant, but there seems to be a general consensus that it's absolute rubbish.

I have no love for Clarke but still to say he isn't good enough to captain the side because of what he does in his personal life is just ridiculous.
There are so many genuine cricketing reasons that could be raised to question his captaincy ambitions and also his very place in the side.
Having said that, for me the biggest problem with Clarke is that I don't think he's mentally tough enough to either lead Australia from the front or shut himself off from all this nonsense that's going on off the field.
The best thing for CA is going to be come out and relieve Clarke from this captaincy burden and just allow him to concentrate on his batting.

As cited before, how can one question his mental toughness when the bloke was being raped by the media during the Bingle issue, and he responds with a well made hundred?

Yeah Clarke played a really top knock, personally thought he was going to get out for **** all. My regard for him grew that day a fair bit.
