Should be in the starting XI for the WC now without doubt. Yuvraj or Raina could be dropped if they do poorly in the warm ups or in the beginning stages of the WC.

Can you give examples of these? As far as I can tell his handful of significant knocks have mostly been in easy situations where India was already cruising to a big total and would probably have won anyway. There was the hundred of course but against fairly woeful opposition. I would say his fifty the other day is the only significant knock against quality opposition in a difficult situation. And I doubt it would have happened if Smith had taken the spinners off. There is just very little evidence to suggest that Pathan is going to be a consisent performer against quality teams
He will never be, and it is a tad unfair to expect a batsman like Yousuf Pathan to be consistent. He will get quickfire twenties and thirties every other game, and he will play a good innings maybe once in ten-twelve matches. That is pretty much what you can expect from a number seven, to be honest. There is no doubt that Virat Kohli is light years ahead of Yousuf Pathan as a batsman, but will number seven suit him ? Besides, it is unlikely that the pitches that Yousuf Pathan will encounter at the World Cup will have extreme pace and bounce - his major weakness. He should do just fine against spinners.

I like Yusuf Pathan. Quality hack imo.

He's very well suited to the fifth bowler/finisher role, especially in India. I don't think he and Kohli are interchangeable but I'd definitely be finding space for Kohli somehow.

If I were an Indian selector right now I'd be bending over backwards to try and fit Kholi into this side.

I'd rather drop any of Raina, Yuvraj, Yusuf, maybe even Ghambir and Sehwag.

I don't think it's a straight pick between him and Yusuf, who is more suited to the lower order and can contribute with the ball.

I'd say the complete opposite. It's not 2008 anymore.
Actually Yuvraj was out of form for most of 2008. It was only at the end of 08 where he had a really good series against England that he got back into form.

It's really interesting with Yuvi.. his form fluctuates quite a bit and for long periods.

Start of 07-end of 07 = extremely good form
Start of 08- mid 08 = horribly out of form
end 08-mid 09 = awesome form
late 09-2010 = bad patch (with 1 or 2 decent performances).

So here is hoping for 2011-2012 = awesome form again :p

I would drop Raina instead just coz of the fact that Yuvraj can bowl better than him. But if he continues he torrid form with the bat, he might need to be replaced some where along the line. Hard to drop Kohli though, he has been playing really well and it would be unfair.

Murali Vijay scored a hundred in the second test against Australia last year, but he was still dropped when Gautham Gambhir returned after his injury. We may have to do likewise with Virat Kohli. It may seem harsh and unfair, but that is just how it is. Personally speaking, I would back Suresh Raina more in a high pressure situation than Virat Kohli, at this stage in their careers (there is no doubt that Virat Kohli is the better batsman, though).

Fair point. It all depends on which number he will play. Virat has been prolific in the
3/4 slot. As you said Raina/Pathan might take lower order spots over him. Neverthless, personally i would be playing him in the team, batting at 4 instead of Raina, dropping Yuvraj to 5.

Hopefully the toss won't play a big role tomorrow. However I get the feeling that bowling first and exploiting the early moisture might be the way to go this time around.

Raina is a better ODI batsman than Yuvraj. Not even any doubt in my mind.

Problem is Yuvraj's bowling, believe it or not, is quite important to India's WC chances.
