Quite a difference in wickets there but hardily a huge difference in average and SR.

What annoys me about Vettori is that he's a world class ODI bowler, but after the World Cup, apparently he's said he's going to retire from one-day and twenty20 internationals and just play Tests and the IPL.

It would be better for us IMO if he gave up Tests and played ODIs. The format he's of most use to us in.
Shouldn't do that considering he is still one of New Zealand's best and most consistent batsman.

I think Vettori focusing on Tests is the better option. His batting is important and it may give him time to try and develop his bowling a bit more. Seems like he bowls ODI like spells with the red ball.

Actually, here are the numbers on vettori worth quoting:

Test matches since start of 07/08 season for NZ and excluding matches v Bangladesh and Zimbabwe, bowling figures are:

1st innings: 66 wickets at 30.21
2nd innings: 25 wickets at 56.84

That is ugly.

Quite good in the first innings though. How the hell does a spinner bowl so much better in the first innings? Boggles the mind.

My answer: too much respect and caution by the batsmen. Just play him out and get the runs off the rest of the attack which is much easier.

TH's answer: he's ****.

Could see him start bowling IPL spells with the red ball.

He has bowled reasonably well in this test match. He also needs good support from the other end. Misbah's SR has been dire. He has played about 36 overs today for 70 runs

International Coach
O'Brien ends his career without a 5-for, Bond finishes with less than 100 test wickets at phenomenal average and SR, and now Chris Martin finishes 1 short of 200 wickets. Sums them all up quite nicely: All "nearly" bowlers.

Pak going to fall just 40 odd short that despite scoring 20 runs from their last 15 overs. Would leave a bad taste in my mouth if I was a Pakistani fan.

Match situation might have something to do with it - other team is usually well ahead by the second innings so vettori can generate less pressure?

absoloute ***** stuff these tactics will not take us anywhere as a team gutless from Misbah and co.

Yeah, doesn't make much sense for him to drop out when they have complete duds in Arnel and Franklin playing.
Franklin is a batsman.

But would support Martin not retiring yet if that's what he wants to do. Arnel has not impressed.
