Imran was great but I don't even think he was on a completely different level to a lot of specialists - like Marshall, Murali etc. I guess I don't subscribe to the way some people rate all-rounders, i.e. negligibly worse in one discipline compared to the specialists plus what they offer in the other one. Often I'm willing to rate specialists higher if they are really standout performers.

Imran's captaincy however, does make him stand out, even from a lot of ATGs. But then Bradman also was a brilliant captain, so he doesn't lose anything on that measure.

Marshall was a better bowler than Imran and Murali too (although he is a spinner but he is a wicket taking machine) but for me the difference between them is very very small.

Hence the part in bold in your above post is the key though. I guess I subscribe to this view.

Something I said about Imran Khan somewhere else on web - "If you'd dream to be a cricketer, why'd you dream to be anyone but Imran Khan Niazi".

Although I don't rate Imran ahead of Bradman and Sobers, it is good to see somebody does. Good to have diversity of opinion on who is the greatest cricketer ever (unless it is a naive Tendulkar fanboy).

Very interesting comment indeed and I agree with your statement regarding wanting to be imran khan. If there was one cricketer i would have want to be it would be Imran. In fact I remember the first time ESPN Legends of cricket came out in Imran Khan's episode Sanjay Manjrekar said and i remember it very well

Sanjay on Imran... "Imran Khan is so special to me as far as I am concerned he is god to me and if I am reborn and given a choice who would you want to be, I would want to be Imran Khan"

I do think that there is a huge element of glamor and persona involved not just his cricketing skills whereby a lot of people want to be like Imran Khan.

of course imran has a very strong case for being the second greatest cricketer of all time. as it has been said many times on this forum by different posters, there are about 7,8 cricketers who are so closely bunched together that they can be ranked in any order behind bradman. imran is definitely one of them.
