IPL4 Auction

I say, bring the politics into sport. Its too hard to really separate the two, especially when in some contexts where sports teams represent countries - which are primarily political constructs. So use it properly, and not like kindergarteners.

So, India, do what you need to wrt the Pakistani cricket team (but be smart about it, 'cricket diplomacy' is a tool too).

But this IPL business is private teams contracting with individual players. If there's any political slant to it, it is on the lines of increasing people-to-people contact in ways that bypass governments and other powers-that-be.This works for peace in general which in turn actually works for India, I think.

If most IPL teams have 2 or 3 players from Pakistan (not for show, that's probably how the talent breaks down in cricket) then what is Lashkar going to do - "ooh lets bomb Pune because our man Afridi is winning matches for them"? , see how well that plays on Pakistani TV because Afridi is likely to say "wtf, you ****s".

This is just daft on a massive scale, for political reasons and for sporting reasons.

I absolutely love Bangalore even more now!

Kohli (obviously!) and now Pujara, Dilshan, AB Devilliers, Zaheer (again) :D

Saurabh Tiwary I can give or take. He's a good T20 player, but I don't like watching him play

Imagine being Saurabh Tiwary though. He's now earning $1.6 million for doing sweet **** all in international cricket.

It's going to be challenging to keep Indian youngsters motivated when this sort of money is available DESPITE not doing well in any form of international cricket ever.

When you have private teams then how does bringing players from some country bring in people to people contact. It is some people come here coz it is offering good money. Diplomacy would be if some national players say, they are doing it for cricket, becoming cricket ambassadors and would not ask for any fee.
More ever all these private clubs are under the purview of BCCI. Buy sell live all through BCCI which is responsible for Indian Team, hence BCCI is equally responsible for whatever happens.

Why would any team not pick Chris Gayle. He is such an explosive batsman. He can single handily turn any game. He at 400k would have been an excellent pick.
Can it be because of his overall attitude?

Most people thought Hyderabad would win after the first auction. They were favourites before IPL 1, but after Kolkata demolished Bangalore in the first game (McCullum's epic knock), everyone thought Kolkata were going to be awesome.

They weren't :p

Because Joe Public in Pakistan is far more likely to watch IPL if players from their land were welcomed than if they were excluded for being Pakistani. No?

And as for BCCI (or any cricket board for that matter), their accountability to the country they represent is on very murky ground. BCCI in particular is a federation of cricket associations, which in turn are associations of private cricket clubs. It is most certainly not part of the Indian government and IPL profits made by BCCI do not go to the benefit of the general public but for the benefit of these private clubs. (In theory. Who knows what happens in practice. BCCI is claiming - in a court of law - that it is a private charitable organization!).

Meh, played no part in our T20 win, and tbh after the World Cup I'd much rather he came back to England, rested, spent some quality time with his family and played a couple of games for Lancashire in the Championship than play IPL. Anderson not getting picked up is good news IMO.
Thats a relevant point, GF ,but the players are human after all. I wonder how some of the players making good money and some not will affect the dressing room environment. Good on them if they're professional enough to put this out of mind, but it's got to be there at the back of the mind, isn't it?

KKR doesn't look all that flash tbh. SRK doesn't know how to do business. He just has a truck load of money to waste lol..

Mumbai took Rohit Sharma OMG that kid is trash

- Sachin Tendulkar (c)
- Davey Jacobs (w)
- Rohit Sharma
- Andrew Symonds
- Kieron Pollard
- filler
- filler
- Harbhajan Singh
- Lasit Malinga
- filler
- filler

looks a pretty boss line up for Mumbai.

I think there is uncertainty around the availability of English and West Indian players and thats the reason for low/lack of bids for them.

Ravindra Jadeja goes for 950,000 dollars, Brian Lara, Chris Gayle and Sourav Ganguly are left unsold. Shows how **** the IPL is

I'm no Jadeja fan, but I'd pick him ahead of Lara and Ganguly anyday.

Gayle there are obviously reasons of availability.

People are being a bit silly here.

There are still lots of good players - Abhinav Mukund, Arun Karthik, R Satish, Balaji (TN), M Kartik, JP Yadav (Railways), Munaf Patel, Rayudu, M Pandey, S Binny, Abhishek Jhunjhunwala, Trivedi, etc,. I bet there will lot of under the table money that will be offered to players like Rayudu/Pandey, etc,. as they cannot be part of the auction. What a way to encourage corruption :(

DC has the highest balance left. They are looking poised to build a solid mid tier Indian player bench strength from the auction tomorrow which they lacked for the past 3 years. It will be interesting tomorrow.
