Yeah, this. Would end in tears almost every time... and then you've got to hide him in the field. I've always thought that if Samit Patel couldn't be bothered to lose weight with an England career on offer, then it said a huge amount about discipline and self-control. A first-class average of 44 does not inspire confidence (Hughes for example is 49). If he is struggling to dominate first-class, what is going to happen when he goes up a level.

Clarke was only averaging 37 when picked for the test team, no reason why they couldnt punt on someone averaging more than that. Ferguson, White, Marsh all in that boat too.

I think comparing Cosgrove to Hayden as a 'large bloke' is a bit insulting to Hayden tbh.

Cosgrove was squeezed into his uniform last night like a stuffed lemon and was nearly run out several times before his eventual dismissal. I'd consider him for tests but we can't afford two poor runners between the wickets in our ODI batting line up.

and the teem can afford to carry spuds like an out of form hughes who has a noted problem with lack of foot work and bad technique.that has been dropped and told to fix it, still gets selected with the same problem.

and michael clark who has always been an over rated dud is nothing but a flat track bully and an end of series specialist who scores his runs at the end of a series when the pressure is off, and the series has been won or lost. he has had it easy behind greats in the likes of hayden, langer ponting, martyn, and waugh.

He was only 23 tbf. Plus it was obvious after about 10-20 tests that he wasn't up to scratch yet.

Australia really aren't spoilt for choices at the moment. Even though Cosgrove is averaging only 44, I guess he should still be around the top of the list for U-30 FC cricketers in Australia.

If he is good enough they should pick him as a batsmen.

Their selectors won't have picked Inzamam,Ranatunga or Aravinda at the moment if they had the chance? Hell,i think they would have picked Ramesh Powar too by now .

TBF Cosgrove considerably chunkier than any of them. Unless he's slimmed down dramatically since the end of our summer. Not quite Leverockesque, but would be the plumpest test cricketer since Ollie Milburn I'd guess.

He's huge.

Would pick him for all that. I'm not sure in the current climate Oz can afford to be quite so prescriptive in their picks. & is a weight problem really more of an impediment to a test career than a ****ty technique (Hughes) or duff shot selection (Smith)?

From the Big Bash game last night, Cosgrove looked bigger than ever.

I still don't believe he is in the top 6 batsman in this country though.

Cosgroves got the talent but they can't pick him in his current form or it'll send a bad message for the rest of the side and for the shield. I don't think he has too many issues with running between the wickets myself, the other night he was being pushed for some very tight singles and the judgement of tassies runs was TERRIBLE all game. He had a great season with Glamorgan last year aswell. If he could lose some weight he'd be top shelf but i think even he's given up now, in last years english t20 he listed his toughest opponent as the fitness trainer :P

I saw him a few times playing for Glamorgan last year and his weight didn't seem to be much of an issue. With Samit Patel he really looks to be blowing out of his arse after a long innings, but Cos played some sizeable ones and didn't seem to run out of steam.

Bowls at a decent lick too; was up around and even over 80mph when he sent down a few overs.

Definitely good enough, good fielder too despite weight. Great hands.

Won't be a guy who gets big tons unless he does it at a run-a-ball, though. Gets out a lot between 50 and 80 too, conversion rate sucks. In the current line-up, that could be a real liability.

If he was scoring mountains of runs, his weight wouldn't matter, ala Boof Lehmann. As it is, he's doing well enough to be a first pick for any state team (except maybe a full-strength NSW), but needs to do a fair bit more to make the national team, you'd feel. That's if he was in good shape; being a fattie means he'd have to do that much more to convince the selectors.

at least he is inform and has talent! picking out of form duds from NSW is the better option?
