*Official* Fifth Test at the SCG

Yeah, happened to me once as well. Noise as the ball passed the bat (which the umpire, the non-striker and myself all heard) but I didn't feel a thing and there was no deviation. I was given; still not sure if I hit it. Probably did.
I was given out caught behind once when 1st slip clicked his fingers. Only the bowler and 1st slip appealed. Was told later by the keeper what happened. Hadn't got near one all innings, not sure what the umpire was thinking. Needless to say, the 1st slip was a ****.

Concerning the state of the match, I've just realised it's all a bit day 3 of Brisbane so far, for the other side.

I'd say England are in a much better position to win the match than Aus were then, after all the pitch is taking some turn and we have Swanny up our sleeves.

Swann really needs to perform here for his own sake, a position like this is basically why he's here.

Controversy watch:
Nice little bit of comment on cricinfo about the Hughes "catch" and the Bell referral. Cook said that Hughes had made it clear that he wasn't sure if it was a catch, and Clarke said that none of the Aussies were bothered about Bell referring it. So I'll dismount my high horse and join in the festival of love that's clearly getting underway in Sydney.

Cricket watch:
What an enormous day that was for England. At the start of the day, it was hard to say who had their noses in front, and Australia were in with a genuine chance of winning the match and drawing the series. That now looks very hard to imagine. Not impossible, but pretty implausible.

Sleep watch:
Up till 4am, at work today. Shattered.

Different context, though, of course. If we end up drawing this Test due to a magnificent Aussie rearguard, well that's ok because we still win the series. Whereas Australia really needed that win at the Gabba.

Just saw the highlights of the Bell incident. The delivery from Watson soon afterwards that jagged back in a hit Bell in the cajones made the most painful crunching noise. I actually lolled when I saw it...it must have been so satisfying for Watson .

Sick of bringing him up, but I reckon Steve Smith has actually gotten worse as a cricketer in the last few months. Last season he looked so much more self-assured. His bowling today was nowhere near his best, his high action was completely gone. Hopefully he can display some of what he's capable of in the next two days.
Has he been working with one (in)famous legspin coach?

Have we missed a trick by not putting a sweeper on the cover boundary and bowling some half volley pies to Cook to coax the old strokes out of him?

In game theory speak for my own pleasure: did our attack result in him having the dominant strategy at equilibrium :p and we failed to seek a new strategy

A lot depends on the Aussie bowling tomorrow morning, another hour with Prior, Bres and Swanny hitting it will really take the game away from them. It could be that Prior messes up the restart, so a very interesting first session.

The end of this innings is really just jostling for position, of course. The real question is how many wickets England can pick up by the end of the day. If they can snag 5 Aussies by the close the win should be pretty starightforward.

I've just got no confidence at all in our batting, and think that we'll need some help from the weather gods to see this one through for a draw.

Red letter day for Hughes.

Plenty happening in that day's play, and I was absolutely delighted to see Bell get the hundred he has so deserved this series. He has batted absolutely beautifully, and has been a joy to watch. Cook has just gone on and on, his concentration and hunger for runs has been immense, while Prior gave the innings a further boost by scoring at virtually a run a ball and really helping in taking the game away from Australia, at pace.

It was a good day to bat, the Aussie attack found minimal movement out there, and once again struggled with any consistency and patience. Johnson was generally all over the place, but has picked up three wickets, Hilf was really ineffective again, and for all Siddle's huff and puff, he too was negotiated relatively easily. Beer looks competent, but nothing spectacular, doesn't give it a massive rip, no great drift, changes his pace and effectively, any better than Hauritz ? I'd guess not, and certainly not as an all-round cricketer. Watson was steady enough, and lured a loose one from Cook that he would have had no designs on playing at earlier in his innings.

The controversial moments were interesting. Read Ausage comparing the Hughes alleged catch and Bell's caught behind, while they are completely different things, On reflection with Hughes, perhaps he has got carried away by the appealing of the senior players around him, I think he was pretty sure it didn't carry, and should have had the balls to say so or ask the umpires to review, without throwing the ball up and continuing with the mild celebrations. Hughes said to Cook, presumably after it was referred, he wasn't sure, had Cook begun to walk I'm not so sure he'd have been so forthcoming with his opinion.

As for Bell's dismissal, without Snicko it would be difficult to say without any doubt he's hit it. The on-field umpire had given him out, and the information he should have received from the third umpire was "There's nothing showing up on Hotspot, yet there is a noise, there is no appreciable deflection off the bat, but the noise could not have come from bat on pad, or ball nicking off anything else other than bat. Technology does not strengthen your decision, nor does it necessarily disprove you were right initially". Therefore Dar should have stuck with his decision that he saw from 22 yards, providing he was confident he had it right, which presumably he did.

As for Bell's part, I think it's perfectly plausible he didn't feel anything off the bat, he'll have known there was a noise, hence his uncertainty in referring, he was a key wicket and absolutely should have referred it. Absolutely not cheating in any way, how on earth was he to know HotSpot would show nothing? Further proof it was such a fine nick.

All of that means we are in a position of real strength. Some positivity from the boys with the bat in the morning and hopefully more turn from the pitch later in the day will mean Swann will really be in business.

Yep very poor form from Hughes. I think he got carried away in the moment, what with Cook being 99 and the appealing of his team mates. Still should have been strong enough to put those things to one side and admit that it bounced. He's saying "not sure" was really saying "no I didn't catch it, but let's send it upstairs and hope the replay shows a miracle".

The thing with reviewing catches is it rarely favours the fielding side aswell. Anyway putting that incident to one side, it will be a big innings for Hughes in the second innings, will he come out looking to play his shots and take a chance or is he more likely to show similar patience to what he did in the first innings ? Of course it's important if England can remain as disciplined as they have. How will he play Swann should he get through the new ball ?
