*Official* Fifth Test at the SCG

I doubt Hughes intended to cheat. He definitely felt pressured to claim it after seeing Clarke's celebration IMO.

No I'm not saying Clarke definitely knew it bounced. Just saying after seeing the skipper celebrate he instinctively claimed the catch.

Poor form all round, but forgiveable.

Yeah that's what I think as well. I just can't see Hughes cheating on purpose, he is too decent for that.

Yeah probably this. Especially because it is Clarke who for all respects and purposes is his mentor.

Hughes is a good lad.

But from the very instance where Hughes went to short leg for Cook, I wanted him to be much closer in. I mean it was quite ridiculous how far back he was positioned.

Wonder what would have happened if Cook took off for a run whilst the ball was thrown away by the Prince.

Hmm that's interesting. His celebration was pretty confident though. I wonder if he did that because he didn't want to feel like he let the team down (not that he could have done much better, it was an excellent effort).
Yes, thinking about it afterwards, in the heat of the moment, with the adrenaline flowing, he just got swept up by it all and then thought 'uh uh we better check it'.

I think he was there for the clip off the legs which he sometimes doesn't control rather than as a regulation batpad, there wasn't a lot of turn so i think it was a tactic rather than a placement mistake.

Really? Because I rather think Hughes is a poor fieldsman, especially in that position. And I noticed for other batsman he was that deep too.

He's been the short leg for a lot of his Test career IIRC. Certainly the backup for Katich.

Given the fields Clarke was setting, with lots of short mid wickets, leg gullies etc I would say flibbertyjibber is correct and that was the plan. He almost holed out to one of those short mids too so I'd say it was a good one.

Yeah but even in other games he's been deep, under Ponting's captaincy for example when Siddle/Mitch has been bowling short to Prior/Bell.

You watch Cook always get right under the nose of the batsman, but you can't even see Hughes in the frame when the bowler bowls.

True but given that he's not there as a bat pad I'd not want him much closer.

I can deal with the bowlers being crap, its the batting that miffs me. Guys averaging 45+ and some over 50 just not doing the job, yet a guy like Cook who looks like he has one scoring shot can make 700+ runs and look like he's having the most extended net session of all time, not even sweating.
I can't. The reason Cook scored so many runs was helped along by our bowlers being crap. What amazes me is, even after getting him exactly as you'd expect him to be dismissed a couple of times, we still managed to revert to bowling rubbish.

At what point is the line drawn between being inconsistent and being ordinary. I hope it's this series.

With the bottom feeder scoring 115 today, Australian cricket is officially dead in the water.
