Did Jayasuriya win the World Cup on his own then? IMO, De Silva was the most important player to winning the tournament in '96, especially with his hundred and three-for in the final.
Nah I dont think so. I'd say Asanka Gurusinha was the most important player when it came to winning that tournament. He was horrid to watch and dead boring but when the wickets were tumbling at the other end, it was his stonewalling and occupation of the crease that ended up getting us over the line. Sanath and Aravinda might have taken the credit but leading up to that finals there were a series of knocks by him that got barely any credit and which ultimately led to Sri Lanka writing their names in the history of the game.

Classic.. I meant sarcastically...

He has won a WC, Changed the way the top order batters should bat.. Literally created terror to the bowlers, played for 21 years almost and you call him hit or miss..
I think he is a bit hit or miss at times and its probably why his average isn't as high as it could be. Some days when he's on song he starts dominating bowlers and is absolutely fantastic to watch. Other days he'll have you holding your head in your hands and be out for a single digit or two.

Ah fair enough, that's interesting. Looking at the scorecards from that World Cup, I can see that he made some good contributions, particularly to the win against Zimbabwe and with a steadying fifty in the final, and for all that he might have been boring he scored them at a pretty decent strike-rate also. Perhaps he was written off a touch because of lack of style, I'm not sure?

Like who? ODI cricket evolved in the 1990's and players started adapting from then on. People playing the ODI's in the 70's and 80's were just so averse of it and did not really adapt to the game.. If any I would only select players from the 90's. Apart from Kapil Dev, Joel Garner, Allan Border, Dean Jones not many are worth their salt and these 4 have played atleast 100 games.

It does not make sense to select players with less than 100 games. At least 75 should be a criteria. If i had to nominate i would not select people who have not played 100 games.
Garner: 98 games.

Yeah I think was possibly the lack of style but probably it was more due to the fact that Aravinda, Kalu and Sanath were blasting it all over the place and back then we probably compared him with them.
