Gee, while we're at it why don't we wheel a trolley out to open with Brendon McCullum. Sure, it's not an opening batsmen but I'd have a lot more faith in it's ability to frustrate the oppositions bowling attack then I do McIntosh and it wouldn't throw it's wicket away with a poor shot either.
No, but it'd be a prime candidate for LBW and forget about taking any quick singles.

Doubt it. I think we need all the batting practice we can get.
Test bats that are playing =

Baz - out
Williamson - out
McIntosh - in right now
Franklin? - in right now and only a half chance
Watling - no
Brownlie - no
Vettori - yes but don't reckon he needs a hit around
Young - yes... but he'll probably fail :(
and then its the bowlers

Need the bowling sorted more than anything IMO. Would like Arnel to get in the wickets, Southee too.

If Franklin can score a few here, he may be more than half a chance.

IMO, McIntosh, Vettori and Young all need time in the middle.

I'm more worried by the batting than the bowling, tbh. Aside from McCullum, that was a woeful first innings.

Especially considering Franklin picked up two wickets with the ball against pretty much the same Pakistan side that will play the first test.

Since Southee and Young came in ahead of Brownlie and Watling, I'm assuming neither Brownlie nor Watling are in the hunt for a test spot?

Whether or not it's a good idea (and I'm not saying it isn't), batting a natural #3 at #6 because he's inexperienced is definitely what I'd call hiding someone down the order.

On the original topic, I think Franklin should play anyway - whether you change the order not. Franklin's not a Test number three but I have a lot more faith in him to adapt to it quickly than Guptill at the moment, and he's by far the more proven batsman of the two domestically. Guptill's a very talented batsman and I think he has it in him to have a decent Test career in the future, but for all the treading on eggshells around Williamson and the grave fears about ruining him by batting him in his natural position, no-one seems the least bit fussed that Guptill's will be ruined by playing well and truly before he's deserved the opportunity. While it's true that the difference between Guptill's domestic and international performances is going to be a lot less than most, and while it's true that he has more natural talent and a better technical base than most. picking someone who averages 26 for Auckland because he looks good and scores runs in one day cricket is a terrible idea.
AWTA. Guptill has the ability and a reasonable technique, but he keeps getting out to silly shots and appears to struggle constructing an innings. The best thing for him imo is to let him go back to Auckland and spend time in the middle scoring hundreds for a season. He'd come back a much better player for it.

Would he? Because we've seen plenty of players struggle at the top level for New Zealand in the past couple of years, get dropped, go back to domestic cricket and pile on the runs, and still come back the same inept players they were when they left. Why is that likely to change with Guptill?

In an ideal world Martin Guptill probably would not have made his test debut yet, but he has, and in a sad way he's made a much better fist of it then a lot of others that have been tried before him by averaging 33 so far - albeit averaging 250 against Bangladesh. Stick with him as long as possible imo, even if it's mightly frustrating at the moment.

Is Guptill going to be one of the 6 best Test bats in the country in a few years time though?

Definitely should be in there for limited overs, Tests I'm not so sure.
