If he hadn't stepped on the rope would that be out? Or would it be 6 because the fielder, although he was in the air, had jumped from outside the rope?

Yeah. They were good circa 2005...but most of their best players either retired or changed states.
Yeah they'd probably go okay in a T20 State of Origin as they could field Watson, Johnson, Hauritz and Symonds (and Styris if we're being pedantic :p), but their current squad is just bad. They have quite a good Shield bowling lineup which can carry their poor batting at times in proper cricket, particularly at home, but overall they just lack quality IMO.

In saying that they'll probably win now and make me look like an idiot. :p

You can really see the difference in quality in the fielding between this and the HRV cup. Superb.

Does anyone know the answer to my question? It's something I've never known for sure.
I'm pretty sure that you can only parry the ball back into the field of play if you're grounded inside it to begin with. Otherwise, there's nothing to stop a fielder just sitting back on the fence, jumping, catching and throwing the ball back in.

Was just looking at some stats from last season - apparently Heal was the second highest wicket taker and only conceded 5.85 rpo which is nothing short of ****ing awesome, yet WA left him out for their opening game this season so they could play Mick Lewis and Saj Mahmood.
