Have a feeling that Herath and Mendis are probably going to be in the reckoning somewhere.

Praveen Kumar at seven? Really?

Surely you'd at least bat Ashwin, who bats in the top six or seven domestically and boasts a First Class average of 35, ahead of him even in that bowler-heavy team.

Yeah, Ashwin should be batting ahead of Kumar.

In SL pitches, yes, but travelling overseas and non-SC pitches only one spinner is needed. And that spinner should be the best one. Randiv is that person, and from what I've seen Senanayake looks even better and possibly the only spinner in SL (barring Murali) who could spin it on a plumb wicket.

How about Irfan Pathan in for Praveen Kumar or Mithun?

If the complete 1st XI were unavailable for the first Test against Sri Lanka later this year, my XI would look like this (providing their early season from is reasonable)

1. Lyth
2. Carberry
3. Key
4. Bopara
5. Hildreth
6. Morgan
7. Davies (WK)
8. Bresnan
9. Shahzad
10. Panesar
11. Finn

Would use Rob Key as a player with Test experience and also as my skipper. I'm not suggesting he would be a player I would necessarily turn to should one of England's actual first team pick up an injury, but as part of a complete team overhaul think he'd be pretty valuable on the basis his form improved from last season.

James Taylor and Andrew Gale both were considered, but wouldn't be in a rush to throw Taylor in, while Gale would be pushing all batsmen in the top six hard, as I'd have confidence in him batting anywhere.

Lyth just edges out Jimmy Adams aswell as Carberry's opener.

A middle order of Bopara, Hildreth, Morgan with Davies at seven looks pretty strong to me. With Bopara able to fill Collingwood's role with his part-time medium pace offerings should they be required.

The bowling attack is relatively straight forward for me. Onions would obviously come into contention should he return to full fitness, but on the basis this is a side for May time, he may not have had enough cricket by then to prove full fitness. Therefore Finn, Shahzad, and Bresnan give us the pace attack, with Panesar resisting the challenge from the likes of James Tredwell, Adil Rashid, etc.
Yeah pretty much, would rather have Ramps over Key if your looking for Test experience, though.

Yeah Ramps is a must for a Test played tomorrow with England's first eleven unavailable IMO.
Amazed he hasn't been mentioned, think people are looking at guys to perform in the future, but as of the present he's in. Does say good things about Englands back-up that he's the only one of that type though. I think 6 months ago and we'd be suggesting Hoggy and GBH.

Onions is an odd one, really rate the guy when fit, but not sure if he'd get in the first XI now, and we really have to see how he comes back from injury.

I'm a bit concerned this injury he has picked up will finish him tbh - hope to be proved wrong though

Yes if it's a one-off Test then Ramps would be well in with a chance of selection, but with the 1st XI being out, the team I selected was also based on the future, and Ramps wouldn't be around for too long. Also, not sure how bad his current injury is, I know he's a doubt for the start of the season so fitness may be in doubt, no chance if a Test was played tomorrow.

Yes I was becoming really impressed by Onions, had the capabilities to bowl excellent lines at good pace getting a hint of seam movement. Was very consistent aswell, and never shirked the hard work. Keeping my fingers crossed this injury is not the end of him as an international bowler.

As regards his place in the pecking order, I don't think he'll walk back into the side at all, and may need to produce a few sparkling efforts for Durham before he gets a sniff again.

Pretty odd bowler in general, really. He was a middling county bowler for years who never really looked like cracking Test cricket to anyone other than Scaly, then over a season and a half he improved out of sight - added a bit of pace, bowled a bit straighter and started taking stupid amounts of wickets which propelled him into the Test side. He quickly proved himself to be Test standard, helped his country win the Ashes back in his first summer, played a couple more series and then disappeared as mysteriously as he came with an injury that seems to get worse every time it's tested.

The fact that he wasn't a good bowler for a very long period makes me sceptical as to whether he'll be able come back from it the same bowler, but he's actually younger than I thought at 28 so I'm certainly not ruling him out. I wouldn't bring him straight back into the Test reckoning though; I'd definitely want him to do something domestically before picking him again, even if a spot opened up (which looks very unlikely at this point anyway with Finn and Bresnan not even in the best eleven).

Assuming the firsts roll up as Mac, Mac, Guppy, Taylor, Ryder, Williamson, Vettori, Young, Southee, McKay, Martin....

I'd select (players I've seen play, so guys like Wells miss out:()

Jamie How
BJ Watling/Peter Ingram/Craig Cumming/Aaron Redmond/Anybody really
Mathew Sinclair
Neil Broom
Tim Weston
James Franklin
Kruger van Wyk
Todd Astle
Michael Mason
Trent Boult
Brent Arnel

Okay, I only saw Astle for two overs, but he looks the goods and has the FC bowling stats over the last season and a half to prove it. Ironically I think his batting stats have gotten more consistent since he converted to a leggie. Seems to get regular 20s, 30s, 40s in FC now.

Well "England A" (which is more like what you've posted) would be a different side to England's second XI. The latter would include players in the squad but not in the first eleven as such - Finn, Bresnan, Morgan, Panesar etc.

I'd rather look at this way - if your first eleven was completely unavailable for whatever reason, who would you pick for a vital Test series? That poses different questions to 'A' teams as it includes current squad players outside the eleven but also puts more emphasis on the here and now, rather than being developmental.

For Australia (which isn't necessarily my team, but is by far the domestic system I know the most about), assuming the team that played the Melbourne Test plus Katich minus Hughes is the first eleven:

1. Phil Hughes
2. Chris Rogers
3. Usman Khawaja
4. David Hussey
5. Cameron White
6. Mark Cosgrove
7. Tim Paine
8. Steve O'Keefe
9. Stuart Clark
10. Mark Cameron
11. Doug Bollinger

Copeland stiff to miss out, but with so little experience in the team I think Stuart Clark would be a nice addition to the attack, and I think Cameron's more likely to be successful at Test level at this point. I also considered a North/McDonald combination over Cosgrove/O'Keefe, but I figured I'd back the better specialists in this case. I'd think about Krejza in the subcontinent, and I think about Chris Swan in England.
Who would make your Aus B team mate?

Actually, I wouldn't mind seeing who your actual Aus (not just picking the current XI), Aus A, Aus B teams are. A bit of homework for you :)

Steve Smith would struggle to make my Aus B team, I would seriously consider North as the lone spinner and play 4 quicks

Good side. However, Praveen does not have the technique to bat seven. As for Mithun, gah, I don't understand why people rate him. He bowls at 130kph, is inaccurate, barely moves the ball and has one okay season (this year) and then just his breakthrough debut FC season to his name.
