I'm not sure it's the same as him actually being the captain though. In that particular situation his influence may have been more divisive than if he was actually the captain.

I didn't think this ever needed to be pointed out because it was so ****ing obvious, but it's pretty ****ing hard to win games of cricket, which at the end of the day is about scoring more runs than your opposition, if you don't score any ****ing runs.

Nearly won (aka 'lost') with the personal performance of a lifetime + an all time great side still equates to not winning with regular performances and the side Australia has now, no matter what positive spin you may want to put on it.
