Online rumour has it that Bresnan will play as Tremlett has hamstring issues. Unconfirmed.
If Tremlett has some injury niggle I'd definitely rather have Bresnan. I don't think it's great when injured players go into matches. I know that it can be seen as a good thing, because it means they aren't soft, but it's no good for the team if Tremlett limps around all match like Clarke did in the first test.

God forbid that it happens, but if we lose this test it will be very interesting indeed to see what happens with the team, and the reactions from Ponting and the selectors.

Ponting will come under immense pressure. However I think he'll keep the job mostly because no one else really wants it.

Hodge wasn't just not picked for his club side. He has clearly had his passion and his career (people forget we are talking about careers here!) robbed of him, at least with tests and T20s. He probably had a fair enough opportunity in ODIs.

But surely when you see North flopping around for 20+ tests, and Clarke plodding in ODIs and T20s, it'd be pretty frustrating thinking of what your career could (should?) have been.

He's also been denied a lot of money in the process.

Haha... no way anything is gonna happen to Ponting, he is just way too much of an iconic figure and these selectors don't have the guts to show him the door even if he loses the Ashes (again) or doesn't score a single run at Perth or for the rest of the series for that matter.
So if we lose the Ashes at Perth, then there c(w)ould be a lot of hue and cry in the media and general public, and as a result of which low profile players might be used as scapegoats to take the attention of the real issues.

I think ego clashes are reason behind people like him, Hauritz, Noffke and Bollinger not being treated with the same courtesy that has been shown to some other far inferior players.
If you want to play for Australia or remain in the Australian team, then it seems you just aren't entitled to have an opinion of your own and you also better not dare question any decision taken by the team hierarchy.

That would go against basically the way the media has operated for the last two years. Since basically Roebuck's article post-Sydney gate, criticizing Ponting has been the norm more than the exception.

I can't think of any player inferior to Hauritz who has been shown the same level of favour by the selectors tbh. And as for Bollinger I think it's clearly a form/fitness issue...I don't think there are any underlying attitude/ego issues. While we're on this topic though Matthew Elliott is a good example of a player whose attitude and ego may have counted against him, t'was widely reported that him and Steve Waugh didn't get along too well.

No-one gets along with Steve Waugh

The BBC and the Guardian are both reporting that Tremlett has been confirmed to start. No official word from the team, though.
From an Australian perspective, that's a shame as Tremlett is far more likely to have an impact than Bresnan

On the other hand, who'll bowl into the Fremantle Doctor other than Swann?

Broad is a big loss IMO
