Whilst I agree that it is admirable to be able to turn down such an offer, and I do admire Tendulkar as a person, I think threads like these inevitably support the notion that people seem perpetually infatuated with him as a person and a player. It seems to me that Sachin could take a dump on the pitch and it would be idolized as the greatest dump in the history of mankind, second only to the Don etc

I appreciate the fact that he stands up to his beliefs and that he is a man of integrity. However there are plenty of others in the cricketing world who would do the same, I'm just not sure if we need to see a thread about every move that Sachin makes in his personal or professional life. I simply don't understand the purpose of this thread because it doesn't tell us anything we didn't know.
This.

A poster or two also felt this topic didn't deserve a thread - that is fine as it is their opinion. When one does believe that a topic is not worthy of discussion, then surely the most prudent thing to do would be to not post in the thread and hope that it goes down, instead of ensuring it stays on top by contributing actively to the same ?
No, because if it was just ignored it how else would people know it's an unnecessary thread? Also like any topic that annoys me, I want to speak my mind. The bottom line is this thread is just another attempt to glorify Tendulkar. While the guy is undoubtedly a great cricketer and person, these kind of topics are just irritating and are born from fanboy obsessions.

A better person would have taken the money and given it all directly back to the poor children in India who do not have chance because of the Indian tradition with the caste system.
This has to be one of the silliest points I have ever seen on cricketweb.

It is a problem when you have a plethora of such threads, which used to happen when Sir Alex was around. I don't really see it is a problem when it is just an one off thread. Sure, there maybe Sachin fanboys but this is a cricket forum, ffs and if you are not gonna speak about Sachin here, then where?

And maybe take leaf out of Paul Newmans book. where Paul Newmans food brand "Newmans Own" established a policy that all proceeds, after taxes, would be donated to charity. As of early 2006, the franchise has donated in excess of $250 million to a number of charities, in particular to sick and ill children of America.
You do understand that just about 60% of the government jobs are reserved for those people.. Or do you even care to read up on what exactly happens? And understand the fact that our poverty has more to do with the British looting all our money than anything else?

Yeah, but when said glorification is based on "facts" surely you can at least live with it...

I was thinking the exact same thing. Once in a while is fine. It is only when there is a thread every time that Sachin takes a leak that it gets annoying.

I have been thinking about putting up an Imran thread myself (but the posts of a now banned poster named Bhupinder Singh makes me have second thoughts lest some of the Pak fans end up sounding like him) :).......

What does it have to do with 'facts'? Just because something has occured doesn't make it a necessity to start a thread about it. Yes, it is indeed a fact that Tendulkar turned down this offer. Does that make it interesting? No. I can live with it, but I can also live with a lot of other irritating things.

really.. whether a topic is deserving of a thread or not differs from poster to poster. If you feel it is unnecessary, AFAIC, you don't post in it. You keep posting and the thread keeps getting bumped and you end up making more people read the thread than they would have had you said nothing.. There are a number of examples of threads juz dying coz no one cared... If you don't like a thread, I would strongly advise to not post in it. And this is from my experience here. :)

That's somewhat true, but there are some more consistent features of what makes a bad thread, e.g. to do with the personal life of players, something which has limited room for discussion (i.e most of the comments in this thread have been off-topic or discussing why the article is uninteresting in the first place), has the intent of glorifying a player (biased) etc.

what's wrong in glorifying a good player???

Strongly agree that if you don't like a thread, simply don't post in it. Surely that's common sense? Or go complain to the mods.
