*Official* Second Test at the Adelaide Oval

Briony

International Debutant
And Kallis
The crucial difference is though that nobody calls Kallis a genius, some even dispute his greatness, yet he has often come in in swinging conditions, especially at home and made tough runs, even if they weren't at a quick rate. And he's batted at #3 before.

KP sulked on the last tour when he was moved up to the #4 spot and promptly made very few runs in tough batting conditions - much tougher than the flat pitches in Brisbane and Adelaide where he prospered.

Sorry but it's a guarantee that Ponting did NOT ask his bowler to deliver waist-height long-hops

That's like criticising a captain's field placings because a bowler is serving up full tosses
I'm not saying he was asking him to bowl long hops, but it was clear it would be short. Another favourite was 3 short covers yesterday.

He's also continuously placed a 7-2 field, which is tough to bowl to!

Agree there, Punter's captaincy has not been inspiring but he's been handicapped by the conditions, poor fielding and poor bowling. He had the fieldsmen in the right position to dismiss Trott early but was let down.

The bowling has been cod ordinary.

Strauss hasn't been tested yet with his four man attack, apart from the Hussey/Haddin partnership in Brisbane and he seemed to be short on answers there.

Kallis is a genius

What else would you call someone with his record?

Watto would be a good option now if they are going for the containment option, which I think would be a good one at this point.

Tbh, I reckon the Aussies would be better with Johnson than Bollinger. They're both expensive but I think Johnson is more likely to nick a couple of wickets.

Edit: Also, Bollinger bowling so slowly ATM, slower than Watto.

Bollinger looks shocking it's fair to say. His length yesterday was all over the place, this morning his line has gone haywire too, and his pace is way, way down also. Can't see him playing in the next test unless there is a dramatic turnaround.

Easily a great, Kallis and funnily enough KP thinks he's a all time great.

But how Strauss is doing / would do is irrelevant. The skipper under pressure, and under the microscope, is Ponting. And he can blame it on all sorts of factors but the fact is he's failed to conjure more than a single wicket in any of the last 10 sessions

Yeah Bollinger's pace is waaaay down. What's up with that?

Awesome, leg-stump half-volleys from Doherty now

There only tough to bowl to if your bowlers cant control their lines and lengths or if the batsman is too good

Ponting is not a great tactical captain by any stretch but he cant be blamed for other's failings all the time

Interesting that both Punter and Greg Chappell apparently wanted Johnson in ahead of Bollinger despite the former's loss of form and confidence. Bollinger struggled a bit in his last Shield game and brings little to the table unless he's on top of his game. Johnson is often a match to match proposition but the tail looks long without him and at least he counts as a strike bowler.

And then there is Doherty who brings nothing to the table.

Xavier Doherty is easily one of the worst players I've ever seen play test cricket for Australia, he barely looks part time.

Our ****house batting and the ****ing road of a pitch easily accounts for the mess we are in.

Not excusing Punter's captaincy or tactics but also observing that there are other factors at play here. Strauss has been spared these tough conditions because his bowlers made use of the only life in the pitch and Australia's batsmen conspired to make his job easy.

Punter his facing an opponent determined not to give an inch but he's not being given much support from his bowlers or fielders.

i'm not 'blaming' him for the poor bowling, but he's really not helping. He's telling the bowlers where to bowl, in bizarre places more often than not. Rather than just letting them hit top of off with a split field with men in front of square and concentrated in the gully, which is what Adelaide is all about.

Poor all round.
