Phew.

Thought for a second we were a chance of winning it.

Heaven forbid the government come up with legitimate ways to make money in order to build hospitals.

There are only 400,000 Qatari nationals with the balance made up of expats who do all the work and are totally expendable

Anyone who can afford to, i.e. the locals who live on handouts and the well paid expats (vast minority btw), leave for a month or more during summer as the place is uninhabitable

In an effort to take the WC to the "people" (i.e. Qatari nationals), they plan to build a 54,000 seat stadium in a town of 4,500 people

I've been there many times and, like virtually everyone else, hate the place

If I'm still in the region at that time, literally the only way I'd attend the WC is if I could fly in on the morning of the game and fly out that night
and i though Asia games 2006 held there was a decent success...and if i am correct the football Asia cup is going to be held there next year ?

Asia Games were a massive flop - empty stadium etc

To date, the problem for Qatar has been that few outsiders want to travel there and those that do are forced to pay 5 star hotel rates because there is little alternative accommodation as development has been more about ego than economic viability (i.e. VIP would prefer to tell mates that he owns the Four Seasons rather 10 massively more profitable Ibis Hotels)

Basically, Qatar is a wannabe Dubai with infrastructure that is 10 years behind and a less progressive leadership

Hey, if Qatar ranked 113 get a free ride to a World Cup finals, then maybe India who are ranked 142 also stand a chance! :) Maybe we should put in a bid for 2030.
Seriously, why not? Given the way things are set up I would make them favourites over an England bid.

Last year an Egyptian in Qatar was convicted for drinking alcohol and sentenced to forty lashes .

don't think Qatar will be as bad as some people are making it the place is in close proximity to some of the coutries who are experiencing an income boom so we will see a more varied fanbase then what we usually see at a FIFA world cup.Though I do believe a joint bid by the Gulf states would have been a better alternative.

Loved how people on Facebook and in letters to the editor etc. wore their ignorance of where Qatar is as a badge of pride. Classy stuff.

Surely Australia never had a chance when the McKinsey report regarding its revenue potential came the lowest out of the potential hosts? Was game, set match there.

No video could overcome that.

We needed some Amnesty International support or something saying how bad Qatar's human rights record is etc. That would surely have meant more than FIFA than the money right?

Anyone of any financial substance leaves the region at this time because it's too hot so I predict a boom in business for private jet charters who'll bring people in simply for the matches

It'll be a sham - just like the decision

The response to Bra vs Arg friendly was great though

Qatar in November is very different to summer - temperature is a minimum of 15 degrees cooler and majority of population is in town

People here love their football - that is beyond dispute

The issues are timing and the fact that there will be literally nothing to do for spectators/teams between matches other than go to a mall and/or, for a lucky few, the bar of a hotel

In all honesty, I think it's conceivable that teams will investigate the feasibility of being based elsewhere and flying in for games

So much for the WC "experience"

they have a lot of money they will find a way to make it work. They will probably set up outdoor air conditioned tents, accommodation will not be a problem since Dubai is quite near by the place runs on its hotel industry. Also alcohol will not be an issue most of the arabs are quite accommodating to it.

It is still 12 years away, and god knows what all can change between that!

I reckon relaxations will be allowed. Well alchohol isn't the end of everything, and live watchers probably account for what, 0.00001% of the total audience?? Also I am pretty sure that those who come to play, well duh, come to PLAY and not really to tour the place, and it's better for it.

Qatar will be a great experience as long as the actual footy played is of top quality, and the basic infrastructure like stadium, viewer experience, player facilities etc are of top quality. I don't think with their seemingly obscene coffers, that will be an issue.

Although the participation of Qatar itself just because it is the host country is making me sick. But hopefully that'll last at maximum 3 games.

if that is true i am sure people will come to watch this once in a life time opportunity

and i can assure you any match involving BRA and ARG will be sell out because of the expatriates from my part of the world :)

Will be interesting to see what kind of crowd Poland v Cameroon draws though?

On the selection of the tournament hosts o paraphrase an English journailst 'If you didn't know it weas bent when Russia got the 2018 gig you were damn sure it was when Qatar got the 2022 one'
