???? Other than the 1999 WC final. And there has been a leadership crisis since Imran Khan retired in 1992. Wasim Akram did a fine job for a few years in the until the 99 WC. However their performance has still been better than most other teams in the 90s. Probably only SA, and Aus can lay claim to having played better cricket than Pak in the 90s. SL were decent, India were terrible, NZ were not too good. WI were great in the first half but declined steadily over the decade to become quite **** in the last part of 90s.

The main problem was leadership and during the time that it was stable they were world beaters.
You didn't get it. When an Indian cricket fan is taking a dig at a Pakistani cricket fan, which matches would he have in mind? Think again :p

India and Pakistan met only four times in the '90s, the three WC matches and the Independence Cup final.

Yeah, against India the only matches that do come to mind are the ones that vcs mentions. OOOHHHHH........you mean the 1996 quarter final??????......:laugh:

Which reminds me. Is it true that this time around they also have quarter-finals in the format??? I am not too big a fan of those. Super six (or eight) was a good idea.

Yeah, I think they are going back to the QF format this time around.

I didn't like the QF format too much because if a team had one bad day then they were out of contention for the cup.
That kind of adds to the charm, doesn't it? An India-Pak knockout match could really be epic...

Super six format was bloated and produced some poor and irrelevant matches in the last WC. I don't mind the change.

Pal I have bad memories from that 96 WC quarterfinal (that Amir Sohail incident, ouch)..... :) (incidentally that was the first time I had heard of match-fixing). SA was VERY good in that 96 world cup and due to their bad day against the WI lost out. Pak team was probably better than Ind but also lost out due to one bad game. The element of chance is a little too much for my taste.

Haha, fair enough. Personally I have bad memories from the carry-over system in the '99 WC where we suffered because of our loss in the group stage to Zimbabwe. :p

In '96, WI had a very good ODI team BTW, nearly beat Australia in the semis after beating them once before in the tournament. Lara, Richardson, Hooper, Ambrose, Walsh, Bishop, Chanderpaul.. they had an excellent lineup.

SA were no pushovers if IIRC. They did have a pretty decent side as well. Would have backed them to beat the WI on any other day :).........can't wait for the WC to start though and hoping that Umar Gul can get his yorkers back and soon.

That is a bit of a lame excuse as leadership is a quality that you want in a great bowler. He should be able to inspire his team. Imran Khan is a perfect example. It makes you a lesser bowler if you can't.

Hmmm. So we might as well conclude that Courtney Walsh was a **** bowler because he was a **** captain. Right????

Leadership is not captaincy, so wrong. Captaincy involves other things such as tactical awareness so you could be a great leader but poor captain. Surely you have seen inspirational bowling performances by a player that have completely turned around the attitude of the whole side and made everyone else perform better. Shane Warne immediately comes to mind but there are plenty of others.

And lacking leadership qualities does not make you a poor bowler, it just detracts a bit.

What point are you trying to make?????

Pak will get cooked with the current team.

I don't know. Pak usually play better against India than they play against other teams.
Pakistan is yet to win a match against India in ODI World Cups. I guess it's India 6 - Pakistan 0 till now in ODI World Cups, IIRC (or 7-0, or 5-0...doesn't matter really).

And yeah, outside of World Cups they used to play better against India - but not any more. I guess that period started roughly with Miandad's last-ball-six-match and ended roughly around the time when Ganguly was appointed captain of the Indian side for the first time.
