Can't wait for this match. I had always loved Railways playing at Chepauk. I had met Harvinder Singh once, had the chance to chat with him for a while, sad he had faded away, such a good bowler in his prime. My all time favourite is Sanjay Bangar, a real workhorse.

guys, any thoughts why we don't have 2 teams from TN. Chennai and Tamilnadu, similiar to Andhra and Hyderabad, Mumbai and Maharashtra.

There are definitely 11 people sitting out of TN who could easily make a better team than many pretenders in Ranji at present.
Harvinder Singh had a promising start, but he too had it easy because of a mass sacking in 1997 as well as a seemingly shady tournament in Canada against Pakistan without Wasim Akram. He wasn't too big a pacer and didn't add much to his place in the side. Bangar, on the other hand, is one of the more under-rated players to have represented India, but wasn't particularly glamorous or young, and missed out- but he too couldn't add too much to his place and was sidelined for more useful options. He could have been a good pick in the early 2000s, but not now.

Not too long ago, players and officials from Pondicherry wanted to start their own FC team, as players from that city had often missed out on places in the TN side. I wonder what happened to that. It can be a useful second option for players not making the first TN XI.

Dawn of an era: Anil Kumble & Co sweep KSCA election - Sport - DNA

Anil Kumble is the new president of the Karnataka cricket association, while Srinath is the new secretary after their group including Venkatesh Prasad too won the elections and most seats though by small margins in some cases.

This is great for indian cricket and hopefully more cricketers get at the helm of the associations rather than politicians or even unconcerned businessmen.
Kumble i am sure will be a fantastic president for the KSCA.
That's good news. It's good to see the top three of Karnataka's stalwarts from the 1990s (And beyond) make the top posts here. We know they can do good for the state now. Hopefully other states, and more importantly, other sports groups, will take note.

Never knew Kumble, Srinath and Prasad posted on here TBH. I might have a few abusive PMs to send Prasad...

The Kumble/Srinath/Prasad/Dravid (once he retires) team is going to ensure Karnataka cricket really improves in the next 20 years. Benefits will be seen in the long-term. I would not be surprised to see them win the Ranji Trophy a few times

Rain, rain, go away...most of day one was washed out, except (somehow) the UP/HP match that was televised, and Day Two of today's action has been delayed.

The broadcasters have got it spot on. The delivery to dismiss Pravin gupta by Thakur was a gem. RP trying to become an all-rounder.

Good to see Joshi among the wickets. 5000 runs and 500 wkts. A great great achievement. But a bad start by Karnataka when they went to bat.

That other seamer from HP, Vik Malik, has a rather impressive strike rate in FC cricket. He's not fast, but chips away the wickets regularly, and that may be something to look at. Some of the strike bowlers who play for India after barely a season or two have strike rates that hardly befit their selection as strike bowlers. They can work on pace once he's in the scheme of things. He's way off national selection, but that should be something to think about, and apply.

Karnataka, I've noticed, have lost several talented young players for reasons unknown outside the state. There was Gaurav Dhiman, an opening bowler for the colts, who also was a pinch-hitter for India A. He's nowhere in the Karnataka selections, and has barely popped up as a prospect in the IPL. There's Chandrashekhar Raghu, an offie, who developed as a batsman, but he's gone missing for some time. There's Raghavendra Rao, a massive seam bowler, mentioned only as an academy student, but never selected for Karnataka. There's talent hunt winner NSC Aiyappa, who played two seasons and then went missing. I wonder what happened to them. Maybe flawed selections may have prompted them to look elsewhere- we're talking of Roger Binny Jr and Brijesh Patel Jr, of course.

Add Chipli and KP Appana to that list. There was someone called Barrington Rowland also. Ya I agree Raghu looked like at least an India 'A' prospect.

These Thakurs and Maliks deserve a look-in at least at the India 'A' level. There was a place for Larsen, Ealham in the international scene after all. There was a bowler Gagandeep Singh who suffered the same fate. Never got the due. I think he had an excellent average. One other is Ranadeb Bose.

Manish Pandey scored a 144 not out today after Karnataka were 5/54 taking them to 348/5 on a toughish wicket.

Abhinav Mukund followed his double last match with another century today with Badrinath also completing back to back centuries for Tamil Nadu.
Though has to be said Tamil Nadu are playing on really flat wickets at home.

But Abhinav and Badri had scored runs all around India in all conditions. I won't take away the credit from them.

rofl... do you have any idea of the weather here in Chennai? Badri = best batsman in India not in the test side.. End of.

The top ten bowlers are led by Murali Kartik and Ashwin, and also include Yusuf Pathan, Joginder Sharma, RP Singh, Ramesh Powar and Munaf Patel. While RP's performance has largely been inconsistent, it will still help him. Some of the top ten (Munaf, Yusuf, Ashwin) are missing this round, which will help Kartik, Powar, RP and Tyagi get ahead. It's good to see them turn out more than one good season. Likewise, Badri and Rohit Sharma, leading the batting charts with Jaffer. Some publishers are cynical as there's no "new kid on the block". It's actually good if we see someone perform two seasons in a row or more. These charts should serve a reminder to the selectors about who India's best spinners are.

I am not taking credit away from them .Infact i am a big supporter of both.

But it Does not change the fact that the last match they played was a big scoring draw with only two innings and this is heading the same way, imo.

Let's look at the leading wicket-takers and run-scorers this Ranji, so far. Sudeep Tyagi leads the wickets list, with eighteen wickets, joined by Bharghav Bhatt. We see three frontline seamers in the fray- Tyagi, RP and Joginder. Tyagi's still two seasons away from being a contender, but he's decently fast, though sloppy on the field. RP may come good in ODI/T20, but not Tests, while Joginder's not an ideal frontline seamer. The rest, not surprisingly, are spinners, even when we get an idea that Indian spin is on the decline, with Ojha being a national regular after just two seasons. There's Murali Kartik and Ramesh Powar, still turning up for these games and bagging lots of wickets. There's all-rounder Ashwin, fourth in the list. There are some rookies, Bhatt, Rahul Dhawan and Vikas Mishra, and then frontline batsman Yusuf Pathan.

What's heartening is that most of these players are at least a season old and have done well across seasons, not just this one. We also find four all-rounders (Pathan, Powar, Ashwin and Joginder) in the top ten, from which there is something to take out. Pathan and Ashwin are full-fledged all-rounders for their teams. Of these, Pathan and Ashwin are most relevant, as one's making big runs and the other's a primary strike bowler. It's disappointing not to see Chawla in this list, as he's another ideal pick for ODIs, to fill the fifth bowler spot.

In the batting charts, Badrinath, an evergreen stalwart, leads again, and he's truly a complete selection in any team. He's followed by Mukund, a young find, and then Jaffer. The stereotypical IPL find Rohit Sharma, who's a terrific FC batsman as well, comes in fourth. While Jaffer's now a closed case, as more versatile, cross-format openers like Vijay and Mukund are around, and the Viru-Gauti combo are settled. Also in the running are ship-hopper Rayudu, Shikhar Dhawan and finishing ten, Virat Kohli. Young Kohli has taken his form over to the ODI series, and you have at least five national prospects in the list, with some consistent performers. Into the top fifteen, Pathan just makes it, followed by LR Shukla, struggling with the ball.

There should be more emphasis on domestic/reserves experience, with players several seasons old getting the nod over the so-called new kids on the block. None of the one-season-old discoveries have cemented their places in the Indian side, or even looked the part. To build a strong team, it's better to turn to the seasoned professionals.

Rahane has played only 1 match and scored a century in that. If he had played more he would be in the leading run scorers too. I am sure.

Rahane's a favourite talking point in these circles, isn't he? He's got virtually no chance of making the Test side, but I wonder what's stopping the selectors from picking him in these weakened ODI squads. He seems a good OD player.

If Rohit Sharma was almost in the test XI at some point why not Rahane. Rahane deserves better than Rohit sharma.

Jaffer stretches his lead at the top with 169 not out, while a breezy 59 by Rohit Sharma keeps him in the hunt in the top five. Rahane, in this innings, scored 126, making a huge step up in the rankings. Mumbai declared at 544/3, and have taken a wicket early. The Mumbai bowlers have struggled since, with Murtuza Hussain regularly overstepping, and no bowler clocking serious pace. Ajit Agarkar, with three wickets in four matches, has struggled this season.

Elsewhere, Haryana have taken a big century lead against UP. Largely instrumental in this performance is Sachin Rana, the lesser known Haryana all-rounder, taking four wickets in his second game. Neither all-rounder (Sharma/Rana) got too many runs, but Amit Mishra, playing his first game in some time, hardly got to bowl, and then added nineteen valuable runs. All-rounders from UP, Bhuvaneshwar Kumar (23, 6/77)and Piyush Chawla (49, 3/86) have had a good game so far.

In a clash of relegation contenders, Railways have scored a massive 415, and may get the lead against Saurashtra, with their stronger bowling. Delhi have scored 472, yet another big score this round, with contributions from Manhas, Mayank Tehlan and seamer Pradeep Sangwan. Lots of big scores on show this round, and only the Haryana/UP and the HP/Karnataka game (with Uthappa scoring just 17) look like getting a result.

Another under pressure crucial century today for Manish Pandey on a tough wicket for Karnataka.

He from last season onwards has just begin to score runs in crucial and tough conditions in first class cricket.
