Good for him. He's scored heavily last season, and is doing well this time as well. And it's outside the IPL, and it's five-day cricket. Three more seasons and he's a prospect.

Result in- Mumbai win again. Their bowlers devoured Gujarat's flimsy batting, taking eighteen wickets in a day. Wickets were shared by Agarkar (at long last), Kulkarni (as usual) and Abdulla (took five this time) and even Nayar took two- he's looked a lot better than in his ODI appearances.
One more- Haryana have trounced UP, and Joginder Sharma gets six wickets, and Sachin Rana, the less famous all-rounder, got three (seven in the game), with a few runs too. Leggies on either side, Mishra and Chawla, were not in the wickets. Elsewhere, Karnataka trounced HP, in a boring match without stars.
Delhi look like they're about to trample Assam, Railways have pinched the lead against Saurashtra and Punjab are all over Orissa. Some of the draws have become winning positions.

I can't tell. It's an impressive achievement, but there have been many stalwarts who have averages oer 50 and haven't played Test cricket, here in India. It doesn't really help that he's not faced much of India's top bowlers, though he's done well against reserves and development teams from other countries. Badrinath is a more reliable and proven player, though with an average less spectacular.

The batting charts have a strong Mumbai (Rahane/Jaffer/Rohit) and TN (Mukund/Badrinath- topper) flavour in the top ten, with appearances from Sriram (Assam), Manish Pandey (Karnataka), Dheeraj Jadhav (Assam), Rayudu (Baroda) and Dhawan (Delhi). It has changed in a round.

151 out of 290 for the team.
He is said to be pretty highly regarded in delhi circles and is one to keep a eye on.

Delhi selections have often been criticised and questioned, due to influence of office-bearers and lumpen elements. This time, though, they've identified promising youngsters, and more importantly, players who add to their places in the side. Unmukt Chand is the latest, after spinner Vikas Mishra and seamer Pawan Suyal. Their coach, Manoj Prabhakar, has targeted three Ranji finals in five years, and they look in good shape so far. They would, however, do well to keep a backup, as a full-strength Delhi side, however strong it appears (imagine Sehwag, Gambhir, Kohli, Manhas, Nehra and Ishant together), won't take the field too often.

Railways have turned it around and defeated Delhi by 22 runs. Although the match lacked star presence, it may have been exciting, if only it was televised. I don't expect this forthcoming round to be televised either, though Baroda for Yusuf, Karnataka for Uthappa/Pandey/Vinay, TN for Ashwin/Badrinath/Mukund and Mumbai for Rohit Sharma will be a fair draw.
As things stand, one of Assam and Saurashtra (mostly Saurashtra) will drop to plate, while in that other group, it seems Orissa will go down. In the top, it's a lot less clear, as Mumbai and TN are just slightly ahead of Delhi, while after Karnataka, it is tight between Baroda, UP and Haryana.
Now Aakash Chopra questions the need for semi-finals in Plate League, and suggests that only the topping teams from either group make the Elite league. That's a fair assessment, but the cricket in Plate, though of a lower quality than Elite, is still a lot more competitve than has been assumed. It seems a lot more competitive with teams going for wins, while most Elite teams just try to pinch leads. He's also right in demanding five-day games fro knockouts.

Mumbai vs Delhi: The battle to follow? Mumbai at 123/4. Another poor effort from the top six after the last one against TN. One may wonder why they still open with a wicketkeeper. Wickets taken by all except Pawan Suyal. Rahane missing, while Rohit Sharma is at the crease unbeaten on 29. Mumbai are in the knockouts anyway.
Karnataka vs UP: The other battle to follow? Karnataka are well placed at 93/3, with Manish Pandey unbeaten on 25. At least they don't do something silly like open with wicketkeepers, but Uthappa has been woefully short of runs, while Vinay hasn't quite been among the wickets, partly due to Joshi's dominance, though time on the India bench pushed him lower down the wickets tally- but time on that important bench is more important for him. He doesn't need to prove himself in domestic cricket now. Chawla, though, is short of wickets and has had a poor Ranji so far, which won't do him any good in making a comeback to the national team. Sad, as he's a rather versatile player.
Baroda vs HP: Baroda may have relegated HP to Plate by crunching them at 89/8. Bharghav Bhatt took five, while, as usual, Yusuf Pathan took one, and Munaf two.
Haryana vs Orissa: Or is Haryana knocking Orissa down to Plate? They're at 113/6, with the all-rounders scalping most. Sachin Rana took three, while Joginder Sharma scalped two. Leggie Amit Mishra, much like Chawla, hasn't had a good season at all, with a single wicket. That's really disappointing. All-rounder Sachin Rana, though, has done well, and though he hasn't scalped loads of wickets like Sharma, he's still a better package.
Railways vs Bengal: Two matches old, and in his first innings, Gitimoy Basu scores 52. There's little to look at otherwise. Murali Kartik has fallen away after an impressive start, but he's done better than other veteran spinners Chawla and Mishra.

Meanwhile, Vinay Kumar takes two, on the back of a fifty. The race for wickets is getting hotter, with Tyagi, Abdulla, Joginder, Bharghav, Narwal and (guess who?) JP Yadav getting a lot. Chawla just took five in the latest game.
Results look likely, as can be seen with Delhi/Mumbai, Haryana/Orissa, Baroda/HP, and possibly UP/Karnataka and the relegation battle Saurashtra/Assam. There seems a deliberate attempt to get results, and pitches (and thus the curators' efforts) are cited as a reason.

Today's action on television is again delayed by a wet outfield. Cricinfo doesn't update the scores on time, so expect first-session scores well into the second session.
Spinners are in better form now. Mishra has four (including three in the first innings) and Chawla took five, and now it's the turn of Ashwin to take five, yet again.
Akash Chopra's concerns notwithstanding, Rajasthan are at 551/6. Of these runs, Chopra has scored 262, even when he felt that Maharashtra would get the most out of home advantage, against a better team, in his blog.

Talking of Bengal, captain Manoj Tiwary was out due to a dubious decision, and tweeted about it in a manner not meant for public consumption, calling the umpire a so-called Elite Panel member. He's now in trouble for that. One of the lows in an otherwise impressive performance this season. At present, he's had more centuries than fifties, and one rather offensive tweet picked up by DNA. As for Ganguly, he's been playing this match as practice for the forthcoming IPL. In other news on that front, Laxmi Ratan Shukla is unbeaten on 58.
Baroda and Haryana join Karnataka in the quarters with wins over minnows. It's a pity they went up against relegation-threatened stragglers while the other contender, UP, had to face table-toppers Karnataka, who refused to go easy on the last game, inconsequential for them. Chawla has had a very good game here- first five wickets, then a century, but that couldn't help his team make the quarters.
