Don't understand this line of thinking; the selectors have made a mistake (in selecting Hussey for so long), and they should keep making it purely because they've been doing it for a long time? Even if he does somehow score runs and come good, he's not going to be around for much longer anyway. It's time to cut and run.
Mate..... Matty Hayden's axing is a good lesson for all of us Aussie fans who wanted to see the back of him, so that someone new and exciting can come in and set the world on fire.
What exactly happened is for all of us to see, Hughes came and went from the team at the speed of light and such a wonderful player like him today is not even among the 17 best players in Australia atm.
Now, none of us want the same thing to happen to Khawaja or Ferguson, its important to back your tried and tested players when the going is not easy for them.
Also worth considering is that Hussey's form in ODI cricket is as good as any other player in the world atm, so to suggest he is finished is pretty unfair. He definitely deserves atleast the 1st test to turn things around, but can't help but think that all this scrutiny certainly can't be helping his case right now.
One more thing, Hussey's form has been as bad as Ponting's over the last few years, so why isn't anyone demanding Ponting to be axed? Mind you Ponting is my favourite player and there is no way in the world do I think he should be dropped, but only blaming Hussey all the time isn't fair.

Is Katich injured or are they just desperate for him to get a good innings in so they're protecting him?
Read he has done his left shoulder while fielding which is definitely not good news. I guess this means Hughes would be on stand by now.
On another note, the shield game between Tassie and the Blues seems like is being played on an absolute shocker of a pitch, this is hardly ideal preparation for the test players that are involved.

But Hussey's been under performing in Tests for the last 30 matches, and he's been gunning it in ODIs during the same time. Surely 30 Test matches and 75 ODIs over the exact same period is enough to show that playing well in the 50 over stuff doesn't mean you'll replicate it when it comes to the longer form.

Ponting's record over the last 30 matches, however, has not been as bad. It's not been great, mind you, but the fact that he has more than 20 decent Tests behind him, and the small matter of being captain, help secure his position for a while to come.

Basically, given that Hussey's been pretty damn average in Tests for two and a half years, and that he's clearly not been doing much in FC cricket, I honestly can't see any reason for keeping him for the first game at the Gabba. Unless you count the selectors being afraid to admit that they've made a mistake as a valid reason.

My dear old dad went to the SCG today and rang me to say that he hadnt seen so many play and misses since the season before I had my eyes done!

Reckoned the pitch was woeful but some guy he'd never heard of (Copeland!) looked a class above the rest on offer

He may be 87 but is a pretty good judge if history is anything to go by

Katich apparently picked up a new shoulder injury fielding hence why he didn't open. Meant to be minor though.

Couldn't agree more. In long forms of the game, Hussey's been ****.

Come on selectors, make a brave decision for a change.

Agree. I really cant see him peeling off a ton in any test of this Ashes series, even if he does it will a snooze fest. I'm guessing thats why he has been told to take more risks, or maybe move down to 6.

SA letting Dunk and Broad get away, Edmonson fast becoming a bit of a liability with the ball.

Really??

Cassel doing the job for SA against a fairly weak QLD, 4 poles so far and with the length of that tail, chance of taking a few more.

George + Cassel is promising.
