No logic of dropping Huss for the 1st test now.They should've done that after the Ashes last year and should have blooded Khwajha then to give him time to mature but they didnt do that and dragged Hussey all this far.You dont want to throw in a debutant for an Ashes opener

I slightly disagree with not blooding someone because it's an Ashes opener. From my persepective, England are hardly a superpower - not anything like the Windies of the 1980s or Australia in the 2000s. Rather, England are ranked fourth in the World, and a debutant batsman has nothing to fear or be intimidated about, coming up against the Poms - solid side that they are.

Given the game was delayed due to rain and the forecast I'd suspect its a seaming wicket. But NSW should be doing better, its annoying how like Australia they don't have anyone that can fight through the tough periods excluding Katich.

Not the same excuse for North and Hussey though the MCG pitch is usually good for batting and its sunny in Melbourne.

James Faulkner ripped through the NSW tail. I like the kid, he doesn't look a world beater but he should be a solid cricketer in the Shaun Young style for Tasmania over the next decade.

Agree, Pietersen debuted in 05 Ashes, huge risk dropping Thorpe who was England's best batsman vs Australia in the past, but boy did it pay off for them. Its still a cricket series, they are all important, Ashes shouldnt be treated any differently.

And a bad example was the 94/95 Ashes, England picked Gooch and Gatting, enormous fail that selection. They did have a fairly young team anyway but Gatting in particular was an awful choice, Gooch you could kind of underatdn, but looked woefully out of touch all through the series, no surprise at all they both retired DURING the Perth test.

The Gat did get a good ton in Adelaide, but agreed that in the main it didn't work out.

You'd certainly rather them scoring runs, but am not worried about Katich, Watson, Ponting and Clarke. I'm sure they view these games as some light sparing before a World Title fight.
