Only difference is that Vaas is not there who made Gayle his bitch, and as well as Murali who ran through that batting line.
Brilliant knock from Gayle though. Fully cashed on the under prepared flat pitch. It will break, possibly in lunar-surface-esque from 4th day onwards. SL might escape with a draw if the manage to put up 450.

An amazing effort from Gayle, he was much more circumspect today, perhaps aware of the importance of building on the efforts of day one, knew a collapse could happen if he fell early, previous history as alluded to earlier, and SL bowling in better areas. Mendis showed he is not an easy bowler to face as soon as you come in, Dwayne Bravo didn't have a clue with his googly and could have been out LBW before he actually was.
Mendis got Gayle with a beauty, his carrom ball, and showed the kind of penetration that will be useful on days four and five when he has some assistance, if not in this Test then down the line.
Prasad looked in better rhythm today, but not especially threatening, but found much better lines and length, in one spell in particular. Thushara suddenly found the yorker to be effective against Gayle, it only took him to get to 300 before they tried it.
The odd thing was bringing Mathews on to bowl when there seemed very little to gain. He's carrying an injury which is why he didn't bowl at all on day one, then after tea on day two he comes on with WI on 500 odd for 3.
Disappointed to see Dilshan go early, thought he could re-produce a Gayle/Sehwag-style knock, but Sangakkara looks in ominous touch for WI.

Windies need to be able to play Mendis or else they are fudged. Was really impressed with the pace of both quicks. Andre Russel can hit 90 mph. I'm not sold on this line up though with Darren Sammy as captain, hell even as a player. He's basically a poor man's Dwayne Bravo.Unless Sammy comes ahead of Carlton Baugh at 7 and scores runs his dibbly dobbly slow medium pacers aren't gonna work in test matches. I would rather see Pollard instead of him. Problem is who would make Captain. Their 2 most senior players in Gayle and Bravo won't sign contracts. I'm really hoping that both Barath and Darren Bravo get runs.

The way Mendis troubled the mid-lower order may be a cause for concern, but they had negotiated him pretty well to that point. Admittedly with a bit of assistance he is going to be a handful.
Yes Russell and Roach both get it up there in pace terms. Look forward to seeing how they go tomorrow with a full day's play in front of them, and little happening in the pitch. Roach I've seen a few times and looks to have the tools, gets a great seam position, maintains high speeds, and has the control. I've seen nothing of Russell so looking forward to it.
I'm with you on your preference of Pollard over Sammy, but we know that's very unlikely now. Sammy has the experience and has to give the side the control, he's skippering a very inexperienced bowling attack so he may be crucial in this series.

It was embarrassing seeing him get out for a duck like that, being the new captain one would have thought he'd be dying to make a good impression, and like you i'm not comfortable with both Sammy and Dwayne Bravo being in the side, if Shillingford plays well which i can see him doing then it will be very interesting to see who Benn replaces for the next test, cause believe me he's been the main man for us recently and he will be back so someone will have to make way, that's why it would have made much more sense giving the captaincy to Nash.

Russell had a very decent spell yesterday, he's as fast as Roach and made the batter swing and miss more than a few times, plus got himself some maidens, i think he could be key tonight.

Yeah I watched him bowl, he was averaging around 140 while Roach was consistently 5km/h faster. Roach is just genuinely the fastest bloke in cricket though.

Yes, was a super innings but I was glad he didn`t make the 400. I like it that the highest individual test score was by a alltime great batsmen. The fact that Lara broke the record, had it taken off him by Hayden pummeling minnows Zimbabwe; then Lara got it back and also become the first to cross 400 makes for a even better story.

Sanga always struggled against off breaks and the arm balls (that included me when playing for university
). But he is surrounded by a plethora of batsmen who take off spinners for dinner. SHillingfor will find it very very tough against Samaraweera, both Jayawardane's and Randiv. He'll have the upper and over Sanga, Paranavithana and Mathews though.
